Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition Thus. Hardback. 8vo. pp. 392. Engraved portrait frontispiece by F. A. Brockhaus of Leipzig. Original publisher's green decorated cloth blocked in black and gilt lettered black on spine and covers. Floral patterned endpapers. Russian text. Two ownership inscriptions stating from the library of Olga Leontiev, her name is crossed out and replaced with that of Bettina Zinn. The contents includes Griboyedov's famous comedy Woe from Wit and other theatrical pieces, poems, prose, essays and letters. Alexander Griboyedov (1795-1829) Russian diplomat, playwright, poet and composer is remembered for his verse comedy Woe from Wit, a satire on Russian aristocratic life. He died in a massacre while serving as Minister Plenipotentiary in Tehran. Published by Adolf Fyodorovich Marx (1838-1904), an influential German publisher who obtained Russian citizenship and who was also responsible for the weekly journal Niva. His surname has variant spellings - Marcks, Marks and Marx. The book is possibly from the library of Olga Petrovna Leontiev (1848-1895) first wife of the Russian Governor General of Finland Nikolay Bobrikov. He was despised in Finland due to his ruthless policies and was assassinated there in 1904. She was the mother of four of his children. Her name is crossed out and is replaced by that of Bettina Zinn who may have relocated to England in 1917. Slight rubbing, otherwise very good. Very likely as the book came from estate of Theo Zinn an inspirational classics master at Westminster. Slight rubbing, otherwise very good.
