Reprint (first published 1954) INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. [6], 261 pages. Paperback: H 20.25cm x L 13.75cm. Gray paper covers rubbed with scuffing along edges; light surface abrasion at front covers' center top margin. Author's four-line ink inscription "For - | Dr. E. Lee Dorsett | Sincerely | D. Alexander Brown" upon the half-title page along with Dr. Dorsett's pencil note "10/15/65" which was presumably that date that the book was signed; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding remains fairly crisp. A very good+ copy. Uncommon book by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign professor Dee Brown reviewing the famous seventeen day raid through Mississippi by the 6th and 7th Illinois and the 2nd Iowa Cavalry regiments led by Union Army Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson. Between April 17 and May 2, 1863, Grierson marched 800 miles with 1700 men and effectively distracted Confederate forces from General Ulysses S. Grant's Vicksburg thrust.
