German & English text. - natürlich künstlich: Das virtuelle Bild (Artificial Life: The Virtual Image) is an exhibition in the Mannheimer Kunstverein between July 15th - August 28th, 2001. It offers a compelling exploration of how digital technologies redefine visual art through virtual imagery and artificial life concepts. The book and accompanying exhibition investigate the interplay between the natural and artificial, focusing on how virtual images challenge traditional perceptions of reality and authenticity. Featured artists include Yves Netzhammer, renowned for his surreal digital animations and multimedia installations; Yoichiro Kawaguchi, a pioneer in generative art who creates evolving 3D virtual organisms through algorithmic processes; Martin Dörbaum, who explores the aesthetics of virtual spaces and digital forms; and Gero Gries, whose media art examines the relationship between technology and human perception. Together, their works showcase dynamic, interactive creations that simulate life-like behavior and immerse viewers in virtual environments. This project highlights the philosophical and artistic significance of virtual images as autonomous entities, reshaping contemporary art's engagement with technology and life.
