An excellent copy of the very scarce first edition of this volume of children's poems from exiled Russian-Jewish writer Sasha Chorny, illustrated throughout by Boris Grigoriev. In the original Russian. The very scarce first edition of this work of children's poetry by Sasha Chorny.Sasha Chorny, born Alexander Mikhailovich Glikberg on October 2, 1880, in Odessa, Ukraine, was a prominent Russian writer and poet. He adopted the pen name "Sasha Chorny" to emphasize his connection to the working-class roots of his Jewish heritage.Chorny's career was cut short by the political upheaval in Russia. With the onset of the First World War and the subsequent establishment of the Soviet regime, Chorny faced increasing censorship and exiled himself to Germany. This was the first book by Chorny to have been published abroad after he fled from Russia.Illustrated throughout by Russian artist Boris Grigoriev. Grigoriev was a brilliant social cartoonist, who turned to poetry in his later life.A very scarce first edition. In the publisher's original cloth backed pictorial paper covered boards. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with loss of cloth to tail. Spotting to perimeters of front board, with boards age toned. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned to perimeters, but otherwise clean. Very Good. book.
