[Transcription:] "MEMBER NATIONAL BUREAU OF IDENTIFICATION WASHINGTON, D.C. Post Office Department OFFICE OF THE CHIEF INSPECTOR Washington WANTED JUNE 24, 1911. James Grimes, alias James Gleason, and Dennis Hart, for the robbery of the post offices at Fort Sumner, N. Mex., October 19, 1910, Texico, N. Mex., November 8, 1910, and Dawson, N. Mex., November 20, 1910. JAMES GRIMES DENNNIS HART DESCRIPTION. Age, 27 years; weight, 140 pounds; height, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches; eyes, blue-green; hair, brown; complexion, dark; foot, No. 5; teeth, large; scar on left hand; large wrinkles side of nose; American. DESCRIPTION. Age, 21 years; weight, 155 pounds; height, 5 feet 7 inches; eyes, blue; hair, brown; complexion, light and pimply; foot, No. 7; vaccine mark on right arm; small scar on back of head; small scar on left side of neck; small mole on right side of neck; American. Grimes and Hart were arrested March 10, 1911, at Albuquerque, N. Mex., but escaped from the county jail at Albuquerque, N. Mex., with a number of other prisoners, presumably about midnight of March 21, 1911. Upon proper application to the Post Office Department an allowance of reward will be made for the arrest and conviction of these persons under the terms and conditions of the Department's general offer of reward, as set forth in the Postmaster General's Order No. 3171, dated June 2, 1910, entitled "Notice of Reward." If apprehended, or located, telegraph Post Office Inspector in Charge, Denver, Colo., or the undersigned. R. S. SHARP, Chief Inspector" The April 3, 1911 issue of the Prescott Daily News refers to a Dennis Hart as a "gang leader" and describes the jail escapees as being connected with a post-office robbery. The newspaper has a subscription wall, so the search index only provides this key information. James Grimes turns up in a later New Mexico newspaper account concerning criminals brought from Ogden, Utah, to Albuquerque, describing James Grimes and George Miller as ex-convicts from the New Mexico penitentiary, charged with involvement in a safe robbery at Belen. Since the name is common, we need an additional details - age etc. before making that connection. A March 24, 1911 El Paso Morning Times report from Albuquerque identifies two U.S. prisoners being held for the Fort Sumner post-office robbery and another robbery at Belen. The same report states that the country, including Albuquerque, is being scoured for the prisoners escaped. The escape was more elaborate than the poster suggests. A contemporary Albuquerque report says that 9 prisoners escaped, being "led by Hart and Grimes" and that saws had been smuggled into the jail and were used to cut their way out. The saws were brought in by William McCrea, alias William Stevens. He was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Dick Lewis shortly afterwards on a ranch c. 3 miles north of Albuquerque, was jailed, again, in the county jail - but this time in a special compartment, not in the relative comfort he had enjoyed previously. McCrea was believed to have smuggled the saws into the jail and actually sawed one of the locks on the main inside gate. It also states that McCrea's capture brought the number of recaptured escapees to three. And that McCrea had given information that authorities believed could lead to the capture of Dennis Hart and James Grimes, describing them as U.S. prisoners who were "badly wanted." That is excellent confirmation that the men named on this June 24 circular are indeed the same Hart and Grimes who led the Albuquerque escape. So the chronology is now clear: Late March 1911 William McCrea/Stevens, suspected of supplying the escape saws, is captured. His information is expected to help locate Hart and Grimes. June 24, 1911 this circular is issued. This poster was not a routine federal fugitive circular. It was issued in the aftermath of a. . . and Dennis Hart. The federal circular is the more authoritative source. (illustrator). …
