A vingt ans, il compose "Le Cur inutile", roman solaire qui…tombera dans le monde des lettres comme une météorite. La presse suisse et étrangère s empare de son nom. Zermatten devient célèbre du jour au lendemain: la fameuse émission "Cinq colonnes à la une" n ira-t-elle pas jusqu à lui consacrer une émission? Zermatten est alors traduit en neuf langues et même en japonais! Les plus hautes distinctions, qu il n a pas briguées, lui sont attribuées: Ne citons que le Prix Schiller, le Grand Prix de l Académie française pour le rayonnement de la langue française. Des distinctions? Le titre de Docteur Honoris Causa de l Université de Fribourg, la bourgeoisie d honneur de Sion, montrent en quelle estime est tenu le romancier valaisan. N avait-on pas fait de lui le successeur de C. F. Ramuz?
