Paperback. Condition: Good. Here are the great stories of the Blackfeet, recorded by the famous conservationist and ethnologist, George Bird Grinnell, who became a tribal member in 1885. The Nizitapi, or Real People, as they call each other, were people of the buffalo. They originated on the plains of today's southern Alberta, western Saskatchewan, and central Montana. Famed frontier artist George Catlin called the Blackfeet "the most powerful tribe of Indians on the continent." Like many native people, the Blackfeet have stories and legends that originated centuries ago, perhaps thousands of years ago, and were passed down from generation to generation through an oral tradition. Early explorers heard the stories directly from the Blackfeet and wrote them down. One of these writers was George Bird Grinnell, the famous conservationist and ethnologist who became a tribal member in 1885. Grinnell visited the Blackfeet in Montana almost annually for more than 40 years. He coined the phrase, "Crown of the Continent" for the nearby mountains and helped create Glacier National Park. He wrote numerous acclaimed books on Indian culture. The timeless legends and tales he recorded in "Blackfeet Indian Stories" make it one of his most enduring and entertaining books.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. THE SCIENTIFIC ATTITUDE presents a systematic account of the cognitive and social features of science. Written by an experimental biologist actively engaged in research, the work is unique in its attempt to understand science in terms of day-to-day practice. The book goes beyond the traditional description of science that focuses on method and logic to characterize the scientific attitude as a way of looking at the world.Professor Grinnell uses examples from biomedical research to describe science at three interdependent levels. At the first level, the individual scientist makes observations, formulates hypotheses, and does experiments. The scientist's thought style determines what can be seen and what it will appear to mean. At the second level, scientists participate in social institutions such as graduate programs, research groups, journal editorial boards, and grant review panels. Each of these institutions tries to promote its own distinctive collective thought style. Finally, at the third level, scientists participate in the world of everyday life beyond science, a world that continuously influences and is influenced by the activities and discoveries of science.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Inside one of the final works of a Fluxus artist for whom artmaking was part of a permanent, endless process embedded in everyday lifeThis book showcases Eins. Un. One. (1984), one of the last major works of French American artist Robert Filliou (1926-87), which consists of 5,000 blue, red, yellow, black, white and wood-colored dice of various sizes, each with a single dot on its face, randomly distributed over a surface of nine meters in diameter. This new volume of the MAMCO Collection series contains an introductory text by Michel Collet, who explains the conceptual power of Filliou's practice, while Sophie Costes carefully surveys all the artist's works in the museum's collection. She shows how Filliou used play, action, philosophy and language to question the foundations of artistic creation with humor and benevolence. While Filliou rubbed shoulders with Joseph Beuys, George Brecht, John Cage, Allan Kaprow and Daniel Spoerri, he remained a discrete figure who wanted to abolish the arbitrary hierarchies established by art history.…
