First Edition. Novel based on the life of Lope de Vega, a "primordial Don Juan and indefatigable literary machine. He found time to love countless women, write over eighteen hundred plays and thousands of verses, fight in the wars, act as secretary to a noble patron, become the virtual dictator of Spanish letters, lay the foundation of the Spanish Theater, and at the last, die in the odor of sanctity, a priest of God." Great unsigned dustjacket art. Near Fine in Very Good-Near Fine foil dustjacket with shallow chips at top spine end and few flap corners.

Hardcover with dust jacket. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. Rockwell Kent (dust jacket illustration) (illustrator). Second Printing. 8vo. Pp. [2], 3-353. Bound in khaki cloth with gilt lettering and decoration stamped on front board and spine. Top edge dyed red. Slight wear to cloth, and with "E. 141" written in ink on front free endpaper. In the illustrated dust jacket with substantial fading to spine, soiling to rear pane, and light edge-wear. The price of $2.50 remains intact on the front flap. Grinstead served as American Vice Consul in Hamburg; this, his first novel, concerns Salem witchcraft. Rockwell Kent's dust jacket design for Elva is a high-spot in the classical-heroic leitmotif of art-deco dust jacket illustrations. For a book that went into a second printing, it's unaccountably scarce; with dust jacket, rare. And although the dust jacket might look familiar, that's due to its former use in AbeBooks marketing collateral; by using the usual terms in internet searches, we have been unable to find an online image of the book. Dust jacket is now enclosed in a removable, clear archival sleeve. .
