Je vond er vuurvreters, buitelaars, dansers en danseressen op schaatsen, een Egyptische piramide acrobaten die een menselijke toren van familieleden bouwden. Je kon er versnaperingen kopen bij de oliekoek- en wafelkramen die broederlijk naast de koek-en-zopie tenten en de manden- en visverkopers stonden. Je kon een lootje trekken uit de verloting of kocht een kleine zilveren snuisterij als aandenken. Zeer gezien waren altijd de koorddansers, die wonderlijk opgetooid hun toeren op een gespannen touw vertoonden. Voor ware en vermeende klachten kon men terecht bij de kwakzalver. Die liet zich door zijn knecht op een slee naar het mensengewemel duwen, pakte daar zijn spullen uit en bracht vervolgens in een komisch verhaspeld taaltje zijn smeersels, poeders en pillen aan de man. Ook toonde hij zich vaak een bekwaam tanden- en kiezentrekker, verkocht hij middelen om deze te onderhouden en kon hij haren even welig laten groeien als likdoorns en wratten doen verwijderen.
