num. Reprint-Ausgabe. Nach genau 90 Jahren erschien das Standardwerk zur Kunst Kirchners in einer sorgfältig editierten Faksimile-Ausgabe. Das als Meilenstein in der Kunstpublizistik des 20. Jahrhunderts geltende Buch ist 1926 in 800 Exemplaren sowie einer Sonderauflage von 50 Exemplaren gedruckt worden. Doch nicht alle Exemplare wurden gebunden, sodass der Band heute selten ist. - Die Gestaltung, Ausstattung und den Einbandentwurf übernahm Kirchner selbst. Der mit Kirchner befreundete Kunstschriftsteller Will Grohmann verfasste den Text. Allerdings griff Kirchner radikal in den Text ein und schrieb ihn in großen Teilen um, sodass er quasi selbst zum Interpreten seiner Kunst wird. In dem Begleitband geht Günther Gercken der Entstehung des Buches anhand bisher unveröffentlichter Dokumente akribisch nach. Es ergeben sich überraschende und spannende Einblicke in die Genese des Buchs, in dem Kirchner das Resumée seiner Existenz als Künstler sah. Auch das Verhältnis von Kirchner und Grohmann wird vom Autor neu beleuchtet.
