This work is an extensive encyclopedic study of Jewish (Biblical) life and times, and of the ancient Near East and Egypt. The splendid engravings depict numerous Biblical scenes, as well as the ancient coins of the period; the Enoch, Hebrew, Assyrian, Phoenician, Egyptian, Coptic, Armenian, and Chinese alphabets; the first thirteen Assyrian kings; astronomical observations; views of Jerusalem; scrolls and writing instruments; footwear in antiquity, mosaic floor tiles; Solomon's Temple, etc. With 13 curious world maps dealing with the creation of planet Earth, including an early specimen of a multilayered plate (vol. II, p. 963). Fifty prints by Jan Luyken [1649-1712], of various sizes, including the largest he made, 60 cm x 30 cm (Poortman). Wilhelm Goeree [1635-1711] was a prolific author, publisher, bookseller, and polyhistor operating between Middelburg and Amsterdam. Joints split, vellum generally soiled, a few stains. Boards bowed. Worming to spine foot of Vol I. Hinges cracked, and inner hinge at engraved title of Vol II. Ink scribbles to ffep of Vol I. A few sporadic small stains and foxing commensurate with age, but overall remarkably clean to interior. Worming to foot of gutter to Vol I., and to lower corner and head of gutter to Vol II. A few short tears to outer margins. Folding plates facing pp. 227, 546, 826, 1091, and 1618 have some tears, bumping and chipping to edges, long tear to plate facing p. 826, and two plates have label stickers used to repair and reinforce some edges.
