Die bedeutendste Schrift von Gudelinus, der selbst zu Lebzeiten nur kleinere Werke publizieert hat, war sein grosses Werk über die justinianischen Novellen, deren vollständigen Inhalt er wiedergab. Darüberhianus baute er auf dieser Grundlage ein vollständiges Rechtssystem auf. Die gesamte dogmatische Stoff wurde zunächst im Institutionensystem aufgegliedert, dem noch ein Buch 5: Öffentliches Recht und ein Buch 6: Kanonisches Recht angefügt wurde. Im Gesamtsystem dieses Werkes wurden die Gewohnheitsrechte der Niederlande und Frankreichs eingeflochten.

Fine ivory vellum over thin paste board, covers panelled with double-gilt fillet frame with central gilt stamp of the arms of Hans (Johann) Ernst Fugger, Graf zu Kirchberg and Weissenhorn (1590-1639) within richly ornamental gilt cartouche, flat spine ruled in gilt with small fleur-de-lis stamp in each compartment, green and yellow silk ties remain. First edition from the library of a prominent legal member of the Fugger family, Hans Ernst Fugger, Graf zu Kirchberg and Weissenhorn (1590-1639), a lawyer who held the important posts of President of the Reichskammergerichts and of the Reichshofrats in Vienna. The author, Petrus Gudelinus (1550-1619) or Pierre Goudelin was a renowned Dutch jurist who taught law at the University of Louvain. His posthumously published writings were based on his lectures, the present work Commentatorium de iure novissimo libro sex, presents the content of the Novellae together with the corresponding Dutch and French customary law. (Nunc primum editae, edited by André Valéro). - Petrus Gudelinus, born Pierre Goudelin (1550-1619), studied law and philosophy in Leuven. He practiced law before the Grote Raad in Mechelen, the appeals court for the provinces of the Netherlands. After his promoton in 1576, he taught Roman law at the University of Leuven, becoming professor in 1586. These writings on feudal law were published posthumously based on his lecture notes. Added is a work on feudal law of Hendrik Zoes (1571-1627), dutch humanist, professor of law in Leuven and rector of the university. He had an excellent reputation as a legal scholar.
