Naast deze creatieve output, hield hij zich actief bezig met het schrijven van essays en jour…nalistiek. Paul creëerde zowel literaire werken als scripts en hij leverde substantiële bijdragen aan verschillende tijdschriften zoals Knack en De Brakke Hond, en aan bloemlezingen zoals Drinken tot we zinken en Elfkroegentocht. In mei 2001 werd hij voorzitter van P.E.N.-centrum Vlaanderen.Zijn academisch parcours leidde hem naar het buitengewoon onderwijs in Gent en hij vervolmaakte zich verder via studies journalistiek in Brussel. Zijn carrièrepad leidde hem aanvankelijk naar het klaslokaal, waar hij van 1963 tot 1971 een toegewijde leraar was, waarna hij fulltime schrijver werd.GUIDO DEVOS: 'Wie een uitgebreide studie over Paul Koeck plant, weet waaraan hij begint. Immers, de productie van Koeck is aanzienlijk: behalve 20 romans, 2 novelles, 24 toneelstukken, 17 verhalen en een stuk of wat vertalingen, omvat zijn werk ook nog 11 scenario's voor televisie- en bioscoopfilms, een deel interviews en een resem journalistieke stukken en studies die, al dan niet in serievorm of gebundeld, in kranten, tijdschriften of in boekvorm verschenen. Op Hugo Bousset na die, gesecondeerd door wijlen Leo Geerts voor het toneelwerk, een beperkt deel van Koecks romans heeft doorgelicht in een themanummer van de Vlaamse Gids, en Jos Borré in een kort essay in Ons Erfdeel, heeft niemand ooit het verhalende proza van Koeck in zijn geheel serieus doorgelicht. Met dit boek heb ik gepoogd die schandelijke lacune in de actuele literatuur-geschiedenis enigszins aan te vullen, en, op een verfrissende manier, zoals wijlen Fernand Auwera het hoopte, ertoe bij te dragen Paul de erkenning te geven waarop hij recht heeft.'.
