Guiniforte Barzizza (Pavia 14061463), figlio prediletto del noto umanista Gasparino, è conosciuto perlopiú come giureconsulto dedito all'oratoria e ai classici, mentre degli altri su…oi interessi letterari non resta oggi quasi piú memoria. Fra questi, acquista rilievo la composizione di un poderoso Commento all'Inferno, realizzato su esplicita richiesta del duca Filippo Maria Visconti nel 1438, quando ormai Guiniforte si era stabilmente trasferito a Milano. Secondo il progetto iniziale, il Commento si sarebbe dovuto estendere a tutta la Commedia, ma il silenzio della tradizione sulle altre due cantiche e i pochi dati ricavabili dai paratesti che lo precedono lasciano credere che la chiosa a Purgatorio e Paradiso non abbia mai visto la luce. Il Commento, strettamente legato all'ambiente che ne promosse la realizzazione, non ha goduto di grande diffusione: la morte del committente (1447), ultimo della propria dinastia, e con essa la conseguente dispersione della biblioteca di famiglia ebbero non poco peso sul silenzio da cui fu presto avvolto il testo. Le poche testimonianze manoscritte giunte fino a noi, tutte di area lombarda, entrarono nei fondi della Bibliothèque Royale o in collezioni private, togliendo visibilità all'opera. Se ne recuperò memoria soltanto quattro secoli piú tardi, quando l'avvocato imolese Giuseppe Zacheroni, esule a Marsiglia, ne pubblicò il testo con la collaborazione degli editori Mossy e Molini (1838). L'edizione Zacheroni si fondava in larga parte sull'esemplare di dedica fortunosamente ritrovato pochi anni prima in Dordogna dal pubblicista Gaston de Flotte, qua e là integrato attraverso la consultazione di un secondo codice. Benché prestigiosa sotto il profilo tipografico, l'edizione la sola fin qui disponibile ha stabilito un testo altamente inaffidabile, guastato da numerosi errori di lettura e da tagli arbitrari. Sulla base di ulteriori acquisizioni filologiche, la presente edizione fornisce il primo testo critico del Commento. La collazione del testimoniale ha inoltre portato alla luce indizi circa la sussistenza di almeno due fasi elaborative: questo dato, fin qui insospettato, emerge in tutta la sua rilevanza se si considera che alla fase elaborativa piú tarda sono da addebitare migliorie esegetiche di discreto rilievo. Il Commento di Barzizza offre una preziosa testimonianza di gusti che vanno progressivamente trasformandosi e di nuove modalità di lettura del poema, ormai stabilmente acclimatatosi in Lombardia: se pure la corte viscontea dell'epoca condivideva pochi valori con la Firenze di primo Trecento, di certo non poteva non subire il fascino della sua migliore letteratura in volgare.
