Sheet Music. Condition: Good. Jerome H. Remick & Co. [Published Date: 1913]. Sheet music, large format (10 x 13.5"). Paper covers, 6 pages (including covers). For voice and piano. In good condition with a few small nicks and tears and light creasing along edges. Light overall scuffing, aging and soiling to pages as well, but otherwise unmarked. Beautiful cover design by Starmer. A. Seymour Brown (1885 - 1947) was an American lyricist known for his contributions to the Tin Pan Alley era, most notably for co-writing the hit song Oh, You Beautiful Doll (1911) with composer Nat D. Ayer. He collaborated with many composers during his career and was a key figure in early American popular music. Albert Gumble (1883 - 1946) was a prolific composer and pianist from North Vernon, Indiana. He made a name for himself in the early 20th century, working for prominent publishers like Jerome H. Remick. Gumble composed several popular songs, including Are You Sincere? (1908) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1914), the latter also in collaboration with A. Seymour Brown. You Know You Won't is a lighthearted piece that reflects the vaudeville style of the time. [Verse I] Ev'ry body needs recreation, You go 'way to spend your vacation, There you meet the nicest girl and take up all her time; You may tell the girl you are wealthy, Fellows always do! And then the day you go away You will promise to be true [Chorus] All the time you say you will, But you know you won't, No, You won't! You say "I like my freedom still!" Any you know you don't, No you don't! And you say with glee, "No one bosses me! If I take a chance, I will still wear the pants!" All the time you know you won't. A note about the cover art : Some of the most creative and eye-catching cover art of the ragtime-era were done by one of the prolific, but elusive, Starmer Brothers. Their work was of consistently high quality and they were turning out nearly a quarter of all large format covers from the late 1890s to around 1919. The identity of the artists was unknown until an invoice was discovered with a printed heading describing "Starmer" as artist and medical draughtsman. Not much else is known about the Starmer family.

Light toning to the insert, and very light edgewear to the bifolium, else near fine. For voice and piano. Plate imprint, "The Valley of Content - 3." The back cover features a sample of "The Girl of the Olden West" by Haven Gillespie, Chas. L. Cooke, and Egbert Van Alstyne. As the cover states, this song was "founded on the popular novel" of the same name by Blanche Upright, and adapted into a silent film titled *Pleasure Mad* the same year as this song's publication. The filmed starred Huntley Gordon, Mary Alden, and Norma Shearer, and was directed by Reginald Barker. A variant cover features the likenesses of Huntley Gordon and Norma Shearer and mentions the film in place of the novel stating, "Founded on Louis B. Mayer's film production, *Pleasure Mad*. *OCLC* locates only three holdings and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade.
