Please See All Photos. ~ STONY SWAMP A common term to be heard in Ottawa is "the Greenbelt", and its intent is pretty clear. It refers to a belt of land surrounding the city of Ottawa, and parts of adjoining municipalities. Established in the late 1950s, its primary role is conservation of the natural environment and preservation and maintenance of its open, essentially rural character. Protection of buildings and sites of historical value is sought. Within the Greenbelt are the Ottawa Airport, the Department of National Defense establishment at Shirley's Bay, and other developments. Considerable land is still being farmed, and a part of Agriculture Canada's farm land, containing for example the Animal Research Institute, lies within the designated area. The Greenbelt provides real support for recreational activities (including the National Capital Equestrian Centre), and then a major part remains as unused areas presenting their natural growth patterns.
