An Ordinance Amending Section 13 of Ordinance No. 12, Passed on the 12th Day of July, 1886 [running title]. Santa Ana, California, July, 1895. [4] ff. Two stapled, 13" x 8" (33 x 20.3…cm) typescript leaves, content to rectos, first leaf docketed on verso, contemporary manuscript correction to first leaf, newspaper clipping affixed to second. Light toning, horizontal fold lines, a few short tears along folds. A well-preserved item. $250. * This pair of original primary source documents offers a rare glimpse into the civic maturation of Santa Ana, California, shortly after its 1886 incorporation. At a time when the region was still largely rural, city trustees were moving to transition the town from a frontier settlement to an orderly municipality by targeting "celebratory" gunfire and noise pollution. Document 1: The Original File Copy of Ordinance No. 214. This foundational document prohibits the discharge of firearms within city limits (excepting self-defense or official duty) and, interestingly, restricts the use of "watchman's whistles" to genuine emergencies. The leaf features a manuscript correction, the official tally of the board's vote, and the original signatures of the Board President and City Clerk. Document 2: Notarized Proof of Publication. A formal legal verification titled "In the Matter of the Publication of Ordinance 214," confirming the law was shared with the public. This leaf includes a contemporary newspaper clipping of the ordinance as printed in the local press, physically affixed to the document. A compelling set for collectors of California history, municipal law, or Second Amendment evolution.
