Paul Gundersen volunteered for military service in 1939 on the day the Finnish Winter War began. He would then serve in the Continuation (2nd Soviet-Finnish War) through 1944 where he finished his service fighting against the Germans. He would end up in a war hospital after the battle of Ihantala. As a setting the author begins with four chapters that were earlier published in Sweden and subsequently translated into Russian and English. It was extremely rare for soldiers to have cameras and the photos are a wonderful and candid portrait of everyday life rarely captured on film.
