Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This edition of Hawkshaw the Detective was originally 10" x 15" - far too big for modern Print-On-Demand publishing. Rather than reduce the image size, the comic has been reformatted with two panels on a page instead of the original four. The images are cleaned up as much as possible, but this comic was originally published before 1920; the paper of the original has aged & deteriorated. The image quality reflects the book's venerable age. In offering this new edition of Hawkshaw, I have tried to capture the flavor of the original - which is quite different from that of later comic books.(Note the headers on every page.) Gus Mager created Hawkshaw the Detective in 1913. Two of his earlier comic characters, Sherlocko & Watso, were inspired by Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson. Arthur Conan Doyle threatened legal action, so Mager took a name from an 1866 play The Ticket-of-Leave Man which starred a detective named "Hawkshaw." I hope you enjoy reading the adventures of Hawkshaw & his little friend, the Colonel . This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Pen and ink drawing highlighted with watercolor. Image size 5.75" x 7"; framed to 8.5" x 10". Matted and framed in a black aluminum frame. A little wear at the corners of the thin paper, very good or better, the images clear and pleasing. Compilation of approximately 35 cartoon characters, virtually all men, of various ethnicity's and/or apparent eccentricities, but mostly white Americans. Signed in lower right by the artist Gus Mager. Undated but circa 1920. Mager was likely most famous for his syndicated cartoon strips, including two based on Sherlock Holmes; one casting the detective as a monkey: *Sherlocko the Monk*, and the other humanizing him but changing his name to avoid copyright conflicts as *Hawkshaw the Detective*. Additionally Mager was a painter and a member of the Salon of Independent Artists and the Salons of America, and had his work exhibited at the famous 1913 Armory Show. His painting are held at various institutions including the Whitney.
