Crells Chem. Annalen, 1803/ 1- 6. - Helmstädt, bey C.G.Fleckeisen, 1803, 8°, 524 pp., Pappband der Zeit. First German description of Tantalum! Anders Gustaf Ekeberg (Stockholm, January 1767-Uppsala, 11 February 1), "a poet, and assistant professor of chemistry at Uppsala from 1794, continued to teach there although in his later years he was very deaf and nearly blind. He discovered tantalum (1802) in an analysis of a mineral from Ytterby, in the course of which he confirmed Gadolin's discovery of yttria. In a research on the mineral gadolinite he found that on fusion with potash before the blowpipe it gives a red mass, but this was not due to manganese. On dissolving in water, the red solution became green (likt den bekante Chamaeleon) and deposited red ferric oxide; he proved that this result could be obtained with oxide of iron, and thus rediscovered potassium ferrate, which had been obtained by Stahl. Ekeberg investigated calcium phosphate in bones, mentioning that Proust in 1790 had announced the unexpected discovery of this 'animal earth' in mineral form in Estramadura.8Ekeberg published other analyses of minerals and was examiner of Berzelius's dissertation on a mineral water." J.R.Partington, A History of Chemistry, II, p.236.

Later calf, folding map torn and partially restored, light spotting to plates. [viii], 170pp. Stockholm, Henr. Fougt, Originally training as a chemist and physician, Ekeberg (1716-1784) rose rapidly within the ranks of the admiralty of the Swedish East India Company. Between 1742 and 1777, he participated in twelve voyages to China, five of them as captain, simultaneously playing the roles of mariner, merchant, diarist, naturalist, and draftsman. He was a close friend of Linnaeus for whom he collected natural history specimens. The present work was published as a series of letters addressed to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences of which he was a Fellow. It is beautifully illustrated with engraved plates after sketches done by Ekeberg himself, and includes a view of the Bocca Tigris, the Whampoa anchorage, as well as the waterfront of Canton. This appears to be the first time that this particular combination of views on the Pearl River was shown and it established a pattern well into the middle of the 19th century. Only three copies in OCLC. Not in Lust; not in Cordier; not in China Illustrata.
