Condition: new. Pages: 340 Language: Estonian. 9789949858804.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Estonian language. Octavo 14 x 21 cm. Weight 210 g. Wrappers, 176 [2] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Small creases across cover corners, front cover shows occasional slight rubbing to the edges, also front and back wrapper show some yellowing; internally fine. The group Noor-Eesti (Young Estonia) founded by high school students immediately before the revolution of 1905, became the most radical movement of cultural innovation, that drew together writers, students, and artists. Young Estonia decisively disagreed with the older generation of Estonian intellectuals, attempting to break free from the still-dominating German and Russian cultural influences and to reorient itself toward Scandinavian and Romance cultures. Suits emerged as the spiritual leader of the movement. The group published almanacs and, for a period of time, a magazine. Current collection of essays by Gustav Suits includes fifteen articles published by him mainly in Noor-Eesti magazines and Almanacs with the same. Among other important items considering principles of culture-making, here included two programmatic texts: Noorte püüded (Aspirations of the young) (here under the title Sünnisõnu) and Võitluse päevil (Days of struggle), both emerged with revolutionary ideas. Pre-revolutionary Noorte püüded offers an overview of the situation in Estonia and finally set some aims for future activity. The time was characterized by pessimism, skepticism, and lack of unanimity. This negative situation could only be overcome by the (spiritually) young. Education and culture were the means that could develop Estonian society. The culture the writer had in mind differed radically from the existing culture, it was European. Here firstly appears the main slogan of Young Estonia movement: "Let us be Estonians, but also become Europeans!" Written at the apex of the revolution Võitluse päevil introduces the basic ideas of Marxism and the proletariat as a social class. Together with the proletarian struggle, intellectual life must have been changed. Criticism of the existing literature was here sharper literature was claimed to have a slave mentality and expectations for the future were much clearer too: a free social order and a free homeland. In Post-Revolutionary writing titled Kultuur ja poliitika (Culture and politics), Suits finalized the idea of the art world's special position, one that is independent of the class struggle within the ideas of socialism. Gustav Suits (18831956) was an Estonian poet and literary scholar. He is considered one of the most important innovators of poetry in Estonian literature, a spiritual leader of the Noor-Eesti (the Young Estonia) literary group, and also the founder of Estonian literary studies and first professor of Estonian Literature. Book's modernist cover design by Richard Kivit (1888-1981) - popular Estonian artist, particularly known as a book designer and illustrator, ex-libris creator.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Estonian language. Octavo 13 x 18 cm. Weight 250 gr. Wrappers, 182 [2] pp. The Book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, damages, losses, remarks and stains. Slightly wrapped cover fore-edge, creaser across bottom left corner of back cover, reading creaser along the spine; internally perfect. Present book is author's third poetry collection, which covers quite long period of his literary creation - 16 years. That's why verses character and style are very different reflecting poet's youthful enthusiasm and revolutionary moods followed by the most fertile creative period with strong impressionist and symbolist moods. But all the verses are unique as a perfect combination of thought and fantasy. Gustav Suits (1883- 1956) was an Estonian poet and one of the greatest writers of his times. In 1905 he became a leader of 'Noor-Eesti' (Young Estonia) literary society which exerted a significant influence on the Estonian culture. Suits poetry combined extremely personal elements with very general statements which addressed Estonian history and the fate of humanity. He published six collections of poetry, and almost all of them are landmarks in Estonian literature. His poems were an amalgamation of radical, romantic and melancholic tones which were marked with the frequent use of symbolism, metaphors and allusions. Suits brought influence of European Modernism into Estonian literature and also merged European literature with Estonian styles. Stunning avant-garde wrappers and frontispiece made by woodcut technique is a work of Ado Vabbe (1892-1961), one of the most innovative and significant artists in Estonian art. Considered, that the coming of the avant- garde to Estonia began with Ado Vabbe exhibition in 1914, there the press labelled him a futurist artist. But actually he was influenced by a number of contemporary art movements - impressionism, expressionism, cubo-futurism.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Estonian language. Octavo 17 x 24 cm. Weight 100 gr. Wrappers 47, [1] pp. The book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Neoromantic and symbolist poet Gustav Suits is one of Estonia's greatest poets, and in a sense he occupies especially significant position in Estonian literature. Suits was the initiator of modern Estonian poetry, and exerted an enormous impact on the next generation. He was the intellectual and ideological mentor of the activities of the literary group Noor-Eesti (Young Estonia), probably the most influential literary group in Estonian cultural history. Young Estonia turned primarily to the field of influence of France, but also cultures of the Nordic countries. Suits' poetry combines both the very personal and general. It depicts the history of his land and people and reaches out to touch the fate of humanity in general. Each of his books was a new attempt to test the possibilities and boundaries of poetry. The ballad 'Birth of a Child' is one of the ultimate achievements in Estinian modernist cultute of 1920s. It is an impressive literary work, an imitation of old Estonian folk songs, in which successfully united the ancient and modern world views. Circular and perfect in composition, plastic and naturalist in content, the epic lyrical poem depicts not only doula psychical and emotional experiences, but it is also constantly developing and rising action. Book's Expressionist Avant-Garde cover design and twenty amazing illustrations throughout are among Ado Vabbes' best works. Masterful pen drawings reflect poetically with great believability and realism pain and suffering during childrensbirth, not so much in pictures as in the associative chain, in which the most brilliant is the last link, the true symbol of a mother's love - Madonna image. Vabbe's drawings are virtuous - flexible crossing and running lines. Lines combinations reflect movement, mood, patience, joy. The compositions are elegant and flowing, sometimes a strong accent is made on a dark surface. Ado Vabbe (1892-1961) was one of the most innovative and significant artists in Estonian art from the 1910's to the end of the 1920's, whose name associated with the advent of futurism, cubo-futurism and expressionism. Vabbe's abstract works are also known. His significance in Estonian culture is founded on his avant-garde work, for which reason innovative cultural groupings maintained close contact with Vabbe.
