This is the English version of the original German wo…rk Rhododendron: Bilder aus den Schweizer Alpen (Pictures from the Swiss Alps), first published in 1872. The text of the original work was written by German political activist, writer and publisher Hermann Alexander von Berlepsch (1813-1883). Here the English text is written by British geologist and mountaineer Thomas George Bonney (1833-1923), who doesn't so much translate from the original German text, but rather uses it solely for reference. As stated in the preface, Bonney mainly used his own notes and recollections from his experiences in these locations as the basis to create a mostly original text. Like the German edition, accompanying and inspiring the text are a total 24 plates of mounted albumen photographs, reproducing original paintings of various locations and landscapes of the Swiss Alps by Gustav Paul Closs (1840 1870) and Otto Frölicher (1840-1890). Also included are numerous smaller in-text engraved images, including historiated initials and tailpieces, by artist Gustave Roux (1828-1885). Table of contents at the back. Binding with minor rubbing to corners. Spine lightly rubbed, with minor cracking to the front hinge. Minor scratches to the back cover. Book block tight overall, with starting at p.33. Interior mostly clean, with only minor age toning to the very edges of pages, as well as a few sporadic instances of minor to light water staining and/or smudges. Images all clean throughout. Period inscription to a previous owner, in pen, at the top of the front free endpaper. Binding in very good-, interior in very good condition overall.

Text pp. 23-25; nicht bei Lipperheide - Das Vorwort ist datiert 'Zürich, October 1877' - Titel, Überschriften und Bildlegenden in Deutsch und Französisch, Darstellungen mit den Namen der historischen Truppenführer und herausragenden Krieger - "[Für] den Umzug in Murten im Erinnerungsjahr 1876 [hatte] jeder der an den Burgunderkriegen beteiligten Stände eine vollständig ausgerüstete und kostümierte Abteilung zu entsenden. [.] Schon 1875 erliess das 'Centralcomité' in Murten die Einladungen an die betreffenden 18 eidgenössischen Stände (Thurgau, die beiden Appenzell, Tessin und Graubünden hatten an den Burgunderkriegen nicht teilgenommen) und an die 'vier Waldstädte am Rhein' (Waldshut, Laufenburg, Säckingen und Rheinfelden). Die Städte Breisach, Strassburg, Colmar, Schlettstadt, Mülhausen, Hagenau und Rottweil wurden durch baslerische Bannerträger vertreten. [.] Zur Bestreitung der Unkosten wurden in der ganzen Schweiz Beiträge gesammelt. [.] Die beiden Maler Rodolphe-Auguste Bachelin (1830-1890) und Gustave Roux (1828-1885) lieferten die Kostümbilder. 'Statt Phantasiecostüme zu zeichnen, studierten sie vorerst die deutschen und französischen Werke des XV. Jahrhunderts, die Chroniken Diebold Schillings, die Burgunderteppiche und die besten modernen Costümwerke ., um den Charakter der Kleidung und Ausrüstung des damaligen schweizerischen Krieges festzustellen'. [.] Ein Jahr später erschien in Zürich (bei C. Knüsli) ein Prachtwerk [.]. Das Album enthielt 40 farbige Lithographien. Über 1200 Zugteilnehmer sind im Rollenverzeichnis mit Namen und Herkunft aufgeführt. Neben diesem teuren Erinnerungsbuch gab es eine kleine, von Karl Jauslin gezeichnete Ausgabe, als Leporello gefaltet, zu kaufen." (Theo Gantner, Der Festumzug. Brun SKL 2, 1908: "Längere Zeit lebte er auch als Zeichner in Wien. 1876 kehrte er in seine Heimat zurück, um im Vereine mit G. Roux zunächst für einen Berner Verleger die Entwürfe zu den beiden Albums des Murtenfestzugs auszuarbeiten. [.] Jauslin übte seine Kunst als Patriot; [.] das Formale interessierte ihn dabei weit weniger als das Sachliche. Ueber einen gewissen Dilettantismus ist er nie hinausgekommen; [.] seine künstlerischen Ausdrucksmittel entnahm er seinen Vorbildern, den schweizerischen Historienmalern aus der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, und damit wirkte seine Erscheinung unter den Zeitgenossen etwas anachronistisch." - Gustave Roux (Grandson 1828-1885 Genève), illustrateur et peintre d'aquarelles.
