Houston Harte's goal: "To take the finest and most dramatic portions of the Bible and make them as attractive as the very best of modern literature-or even more attractive; to make so fine a book, from the reader-interest point of view, that even the casual Christian may turn to it with excitement. Once interest is aroused, the Biblical narratives may do the rest. . . . "The illustrations in the volume are of tremendous importance; they had to be a good deal better than current Bible illustrations, with their poor art and accent on hell-fire and damnation, and a good deal more meaningful than classical illustrations. Harte eventually persuaded Guy Rowe, a great character portraitist, who formerly did Time magazine covers, to undertake the project.; 12 - 15" Tall.
