Animato da un'amica, Gelso affronta gli esami per divenire insegnante di scuola elementare. E il suo sogno si avvera: li supera e, mentre è coinvolto nello scenario violento della prima guerra mondiale, riceve l'incarico di dare lezioni in un paesello. Gelso lascia la trincea e si avvia verso la scuola dove darà lezioni. Ci arriva passando attraverso avventure rischiose e incontri agrodolci. Assieme a sua moglie Nirvana, quel luogo è per Gelso l'inizio di una vita fatta di tante soddisfazioni e alti riconoscimenti. Sullo sfondo, altre tragedie umane si consumano.
