Softcover. First Edition. Octavo, 344 pages, plus map. In good minus condition. In publisher's gray paper wraps, with black lettering to covers and spine. Wraps show significant wear, with covers nearly detached due to major splitting to joints. Covers show faint stains and creases. Chipping along edges of covers, with insect damage to the bottom edge of the front cover. Spine is sunned, with cracking, peeling, and chipping to paper. Text block is moderately worn and soiled along edges. Mild wrinkling throughout, with small folds and creases to corners. Numbering, penciling, and ink stamps on the inside of the front cover and on title page. Insect damage affects bottom edges through page 14. Fold out map is mildly age toned and foxed, with small chips and tears along edges. Book is housed in a new mylar archival sleeve. Shelved in Room F. 1410402. Special Collections.

(Preliminaries with pale waterstain affecting the text). 30 lithographed maps, including one double-page, all with original colour in outline (first map browned). Original publisher's printed pink paper boards (rebacked to style). First edition. Published at the beginning of a great wave of German emigration to America that lasted from about 1830 to 1860. The first immigrants were fleeing a country which had become increasingly reactionary after the so-called Carlsbad Decrees of 1819. These decrees banned nationalist fraternities ("Burschenschaften"), removed liberal university professors, and expanded the censorship of the press. Another group of intellectuals fled Germany after taking part in the Hambacher Fest, a liberal demonstration that was held in May of 1832, at Hambach in the Bavarian Palatinate. A political group, known as the Forty-Eighters, came to the United States after the collapse of the Democratic Revolutions of 1848. Similarly many Lutherans came to the United States in the late 1830's and early 1840's in protest against Prussia's forced unification of the Lutheran and Reformed churches. Howes E78; Sabin 22048.
