Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Herzog Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg-Schwerin war von 1907 bis 1913 Regent des Landes Braunschweig und über Jahrzehnte Präsident der Deutschen Kolonialgesellschaft. Eine siebenmonatige Hochzeitsreise mit seiner zweiten Frau Elisabeth führte ihn unter anderem nach Siam, Indonesien und Japan, zu jener Zeit noch ein abenteuerliches Unternehmen. Aufgrund des Interesses des Herzogs an außereuropäischen Kulturen überreichten ihm sowohl die fürstlichen Gastgeber als auch Menschen aus der Bevölkerung und dort ansässige Europäer zahlreiche Geschenke. Zusätzlich kaufte das Brautpaar bei Handwerkern, Händlern, auf Märkten und in Verkaufsausstellungen ein. Insgesamt brachte der Herzog über 1000 Erinnerungsstücke mit nach Hause, von denen er etwa die Hälfte dem Städtischen Museum Braunschweig überließ. Diese Sammlung mit ihren wertvollen völkerkundlichen Kunstwerken, schlichten Alltagsgeräten und Kuriositäten erzählt ihre eigene Geschichte und vermittelt zugleich interessante Einblicke in die Sammlermentalität zu Beginn des 20.
