written in black ink on ruled paper, the first sheet with wax-spot at centre (not affecting text), pp. 13, 4to, held with split-pin, sometime folded, very good condition. A talk seemingly delivered before Yale students (there are references to rivalry with Harvard) on a burgeoning field of study that has 'spread like wildfire throughout the civilized world', with 'America thus far having caught its fever in its most contagious form'. Hadley describes an interview with Millicent Shinn, and makes reference to the work of G. Stanley Hall two American pioneers in the field. Her lecture is in the manner of an overview, recounting her own introduction to the subject, its importance to child health and welfare, and explaining the need for consistency in the collection of data. Hadley was the wife of Yale economist Arthur Twining Hadley, who was the University's President from 1899 to 1921; she graduated from Vassar College in 1883, demonstrating equal commitment to her alma mater and Yale the latter awarding her an honorary M.A. in 1935 and in 1959 naming the first residence hall for female students in the graduate and professional schools in her honour, calling her 'a leader in helping women at Yale, whether students or wives of faculty'.
