El sereno relato de su confesión gana, al principio, la simpatía del lector pero, a medida que avanza en su narración, progresivamente contradictora, comienzan a percibirse los rasgos de una personalidad psicótica. La novela nos revela una inquietante interrogación sobre la fragilidad humana, los sentimientos de pérdida y desesperación inherentes a la condición humana. Hailji (Corea del Sur, 1955), graduado universitario en su país, amplió sus estudios en Francia. En 1988 publicó su primera novela, El camino al hipódromo, a la que siguieron otras cuatro y varios volúmenes de poesía. El severo juicio que el autor hace sobre los valores conservadores de la sociedad coreana pronto despertó un enconado debate en torno a su escritura. Muchas de sus obras han sido llevadas al cine y convertidas en piezas teatrales.
