Pub Year 2000, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> In The Discovery of the South Shetland Islands: The Voyage of the Brig Williams 1819-1820 and The Journal of Midshipman C W Poynter, the Hakluyt Society presents a historical account centred on the pivotal expedition led by Edward Bransfield. In 1819, William Smith, sailing a general cargo from Montevideo to Valparaiso, ventured further south around Cape Horn in search of favourable winds. This expedition led to the sighting of land at 62°S, a claim initially met with skepticism. However, Smith confirmed his discovery on a subsequent voyage, prompting the Senior Naval Officer in Valparaiso, Captain Shirreff, to charter the brig Williams for a more detailed survey under Bransfield?s command. The core of this volume is Midshipman Charles Poynter's first-hand account of the voyage, which marks the first sighting of the Antarctic mainland. Poynter's journal, recently uncovered in New Zealand, is a critical resource as it survives as one of the few primary records of this historic expedition. Additionally, the introduction offers insights into the South Shetland Islands, intertwined with the broader historical context of Spanish activities in South America and British interests in the region, alongside early nineteenth-century navigation and hydrographic surveying. The text further includes several second-hand accounts of earlier voyages by William Smith and Bransfield, as well as brief descriptions of other expeditions to the South Shetland Islands that occurred concurrently with Bransfield's mission. This compilation provides not only an account of navigational feats but also an exploration of the nomenclature of the land features encountered during the voyage, enriching the understanding of early Antarctic exploration.
