Deep red buckram (cloth) beveled boards, gilt impressed cover and spine titles; crisp red, black, and gilt relief design, moderate shelf wear. Cover features elaborate deco design of storks in red and gold on black b.g. with golden waves on black below; spine features stork opening bill for a frog. Gilded exterior text block at all sides; some uneveness. Pages very good. Smooth dark brown endpapers. Bind good, intact. This beautiful volume features nearly four hundred striking partial-page b&w illustrations by Helen Stratton; more than one at every turn. Many full page and near chiaroscuro in effect. New imagery greets at the turn of each leaf enhancing the wondrous tales of Hans Christian Andersen. Features an introduction by Edward E. Hale.
