Ingham was born in Connecticut in 1812. At an early age, he was appointed a midshipman in the service of the United States. After several years, he resigned his commission and entered Harvard, leaving before earning his degree, and reentering the service again. He entered the ministry in Maine, but also took various jobs in the west, working in the telegraph business, which was beginning to flourish, even travelling to Siberia on one occasion.
