They struggle when it comes to putting the stress correctly or deciding whether a vowel stays the same or whether it is shortened or lengthened.This term paper deals with Latin suffixes attached to Latin-based words and the phonological changes that go along with them.For this matter, the historical background of phonological changes will be given. This also includes how Latin suffixes found their way into the English language. In addition, a distinction between different kinds, i.e. different origins, of vocabulary will be given. When talking about stress and its movement as well as suffixes that cause them, lexical strata cannot be left out of consideration. Therefore, I will give an overview over how strata work and what has to be paid attention to when using them.The model of lexical strata is of great importance when the theory of Latin suffixes is focused on. The various aspects of lexical strata will be explained. Resulting from that, this paper will deal with where the differences between neutral and non-neutral suffixes lie and how they can be distinguished and categorized.Furthermore and as the main point of this paper, Latin suffixes will be focused on. This includes how suffixes affect the verb they are attached to and which suffix is attached to which form of the verb. Is there a rule for this all or is it rather arbitrary Do all the verbs and their suffixes have to be stored in the mental lexicon Do people who know the Latin language have an ¿advantage¿ over those learning the suffixes by heart Why is it that native speakers struggle and, more often than not, choose the ¿easiest¿ way to form words composed out of a verb and a Latin suffix These are questions that this paper will attempt to answer and clarify. The paper will also try to set a new approach to explaining a regularity and constancy in forming adjectives that derive from Latin verbs.

The terminology out of section (2) will be picked up and be put into connection and context with the two stories of Kafkäs to demonstrate how Kafkäs world works and what makes it so difficult to tell his (fictional) world apart from the one that the reader knows as reality.The key question shall be what the peculiar usage of tense and aspect is which is a distinct feature of Kafkäs texts affects the reader, and how they make the reader think about what he is reading or if he even realizes what is going on as far as tense and aspect is concerned. Is he able to process this flood of information that is headed his way We will see that there is plenty to think about, plenty to take into account when reading both The Burrow and A Country Doctor.

This cozy and inviting house in Bodega Bay, right across the bay, grows more and more hostile and aggravating in the course of action. This cannot just be coincidence, can it Moreover, the Overlook Hotel from The Shining plays an important role in the row of scary and menacing houses in American movie history. Even though it is a place where people spend their holidays it becomes a place where nightmares come to life.This paper will revolve around the influence of the houses on people living there, and what it is what makes them a threat to their inhabitants. Furthermore, an interview of Alfred Hitchcock will be looked at in excerpts, where he discusses the momentum of suspense. Subsequently, the theory of The Uncanny will be applied to Alfred Hitchcock¿s 1960 movie Psycho and later to Darren Aronofsky¿s 2010 movie Black Swan. Psycho sets an example of the suspense and is inevitably connected to the name of Alfred Hitchcock. Why is Psycho the embodiment of suspense and the uncanny Opposed to Hitchcock¿s masterpiece, the 2010 movie Black Swan will be looked at in terms of the uncanny. As this movie is considered to be ¿an uncanny representation of light and color¿, it is supposed to form the counterpart to Hitchcock¿s Psycho in terms of uncanny elements and the idea of suspense. These seemingly very diverse genres (the titles themselves give off different expectations already) shall be examined regarding the use of uncanny elements. It will be analyzed how these elements are used and what the degree and frequency of the uncanny does to both the movie and the viewer. This paper aims to correlate the amount, the frequency and the intensity of uncanny elements with the suspense that is built throughout both of the movies. Does the amount of uncanny do any harm to the idea of suspense Is this idea following the principle of ¿the more the better¿ or rather ¿less is more¿ The current status of research on this very matter is very scarce. Aside from the interview of Truffaut with Alfred Hitchcock himself, there appears to be no hard evidence that this matter has been dealt with. Only Hitchcock goes into this topic and explains what he fathoms by suspense and how to build it (through uncanny elements).

Doing that, he makes use of two basic elements: humor and an abundant amount of violence. It would sound like humor and violence do not go well together. The author argues that Tarantino accomplishes this feat with a seeming effortlessness which could just as well be an elaborate plan to criticize the use of violence and advocate a life free of crime. In order to do that, two scenes from different stages of Tarantinös career were chosen, both personally and cinematically. The first scene that is analyzed is taken from his 1994 independent movie 'Pulp Fiction'. The second scene analyzed is from 'Inglourious Basterds' from 2009. The two films in focus are different in various aspects such as the scenery and setting, the cultural and historical context or sociocultural circumstances at the time of their release, to name a few. This is why they make an excellent contrast to show the differences but also the similarities in Tarantinös work to deduct a development from the comparison. The first focus of the thesis lies on the concept of violence. It gives a brief history both diachronically as well as synchronically. After that, the concept of humor is addressed, and with that why something is perceived as being funny (or maybe not). The idea of alienation between what the viewer or listener expects and what they are actually provided with plays an important role here. A conclusion to this thesis deals with why Tarantino chooses the depiction of (graphic) violence that he is known and famous for. Tarantino changes his modus operandi over the years when it comes to the representation of brutality in his movies. But he stays true to himself in the very core of the kind of violence he implicates in his films, using the techniques and stylistic devices he is known and loved for. Quentin Tarantino is often synonymous with making ultraviolent movies. Just as often, he is celebrated for his distinctive way of making movies which made him one of the most famous filmmakers in Hollywood. The fact that he has been in the business for almost 30 years proves that he does many things right even when critique of his representation of brutality arises with almost each of his films.

Im Anschluss daran wird eine Zusammenfassung des Gedichts gegeben und in Relation zu seinem ¿Vorbild¿, der vierten Ode des ersten Gedichtbandes, gesetzt. In diesem Rahmen sollen sowohl die Gemeinsamkeiten des Carmen IV,7 zu I,4 als auch deren Unterschiede dargelegt und diskutiert werden.Ziel der Arbeit ist eine Analyse des Carmen VII aus Horaz¿ vierter Odensammlung unter den oben erwähnten Aspekten und die Gegenüberstellung zu einer seiner frühesten Oden in I,4. Denjenigen Passagen, die in der Forschung diskutiert werden und bei denen entweder die Bedeutung oder der Bezug nicht gänzlich klar ist, kommt dabei gesonderte Aufmerksamkeit zu. Nach den drei Abschnitten, in denen unterschiedliche Sprecher agieren, soll sowohl eine Zusammenfassung gegeben als auch das Zusammenspiel der einzelnen Auftritte der Sprecher erläutert werden. Hierauf folgt ein Bezug zum griechischen Dichter Theokrit, der auf eine gewisse Weise als Muse Vergils bei der Schöpfung der Bucolica gedient zu haben scheint, was sich nicht nur in der zu behandelnden Ekloge niederschlägt, sondern sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Gedichtsammlung zieht. Ziel der Arbeit ist eine ganzheitliche Analyse der 8. Ekloge aus Vergils Bucolica unter oben genannten Aspekten und die Herstellung einer Verbindung zwischen Vergils griechischem Vorbild und seinem eigenen Werk. Doing that, he makes use of two basic elements: humor and an abundant amount of violence. It would sound like humor and violence do not go well together. The author argues that Tarantino accomplishes this feat with a seeming effortlessness which could just as well be an elaborate plan to criticize the use of violence and advocate a life free of crime. In order to do that, two scenes from different stages of Tarantinös career were chosen, both personally and cinematically. The first scene that is analyzed is taken from his 1994 independent movie 'Pulp Fiction'. The second scene analyzed is from 'Inglourious Basterds' from 2009. The two films in focus are different in various aspects such as the scenery and setting, the cultural and historical context or sociocultural circumstances at the time of their release, to name a few. This is why they make an excellent contrast to show the differences but also the similarities in Tarantinös work to deduct a development from the comparison. The first focus of the thesis lies on the concept of violence. It gives a brief history both diachronically as well as synchronically. After that, the concept of humor is addressed, and with that why something is perceived as being funny (or maybe not). The idea of alienation between what the viewer or listener expects and what they are actually provided with plays an important role here. A conclusion to this thesis deals with why Tarantino chooses the depiction of (graphic) violence that he is known and famous for. Tarantino changes his modus operandi over the years when it comes to the representation of brutality in his movies. But he stays true to himself in the very core of the kind of violence he implicates in his films, using the techniques and stylistic devices he is known and loved for. Quentin Tarantino is often synonymous with making ultraviolent movies. Just as often, he is celebrated for his distinctive way of making movies which made him one of the most famous filmmakers in Hollywood. The fact that he has been in the business for almost 30 years proves that he does many things right even when critique of his representation of brutality arises with almost each of his films. 60 pp. Englisch.

As this movie is considered to be ¿an uncanny representation of light and color¿, it is supposed to form the counterpart to Hitchcock¿s Psycho in terms of uncanny elements and the idea of suspense. These seemingly very diverse genres (the titles themselves give off different expectations already) shall be examined regarding the use of uncanny elements. It will be analyzed how these elements are used and what the degree and frequency of the uncanny does to both the movie and the viewer. This paper aims to correlate the amount, the frequency and the intensity of uncanny elements with the suspense that is built throughout both of the movies. Does the amount of uncanny do any harm to the idea of suspense Is this idea following the principle of ¿the more the better¿ or rather ¿less is more¿ The current status of research on this very matter is very scarce. Aside from the interview of Truffaut with Alfred Hitchcock himself, there appears to be no hard evidence that this matter has been dealt with.
