Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. How colour is used in the most famous works of Japanese art from the 16th century to the present. From the vibrant reds of traditional kimonos to the serene blues of tarashikomi riverscapes and woodblock prints, this book shows that colour itself is a leading figure in Japan's long and varied… artistic tradition.Whether you are a collector of Japanese art, a student of art history, or simply captivated by the rich shades, tones and hues that Japanese art presents, Colors in Japanese Art is your key to understanding this extraordinary artistic tradition. This book presents over 120 great works of fine and decorative art and discusses the colour schemes used in each work, including:The vibrant red, gold, multi-hued kimonos from the 18th and 19th century Edo periodThe gold, green and deep-blue season-themed screens of Tohaku and SesshuThe elegant pinks and blues in the landscape prints of Hiroshige and HokusaiThe blues, reds and yellows in the Ko-Kutani and Imari porcelains of the Edo and Meiji periodsEarthy golds in fine lacquerwares dating as far back as the Heian periodAnd so many more colours in over 120 magnificent examples!A detailed analysis of each work shows how these colour schemes evolved; how their popularity waxed and waned over time; the social and spiritual significance of certain colour combinations; and the pigments and dyes used to create them.Colour swatches accompany the featured artworks to show readers how colours were used in subtle combinations, including many hues, tones and tints unique to the Japanese arts. A colour chart at the end of the book summarises the beautiful colours that are most characteristic of this tradition. How colour is used in the most famous works of Japanese art-from the 16th century to the present. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. Paper in jacket with belly band jacket. Spine creased, binding a bit shaken but holding. 2006 Trade Paperback. 397, [2] pp. Japanese text. This beautifully illustrated volume presents Japanese paintings, textiles, and traditional crafts which feature three highly significant motifs of Japanese c…ulture: waves, clouds, and pines. One of the most iconic and enduring images from Japanese art is Hokusai's famous Great Wave, a painting largely credited with inspiring the French artists of the nineteenth century, mainly the impressionists, to see depth and perspective from a unique, perhaps Japanese, viewpoint. The Japanese have many different words for clouds, the use of which depends on the season, the shape of the cloud, or the particular situation. Clouds in Japanese art are often depicted in unique iconography that is in sharp contrast to traditional Western portrayals. In early Japanese society, traditional performing arts, including Noh, were often performed under pine trees. Pine trees are regarded as sacred objects and are still often seen in the backgrounds of Noh theaters today. It is rare for a Japanese artist or photographer to present an aesthetically beautiful landscape without pine trees, as is evident in the many illustrations and photographs in this book. Over 120 works dating from the fifteenth century through the present are featured in Wave, Cloud, Pine.
