Third year of this anthology for young people, with an illustrated calendar noting holy days, short stories, essays, plays, games, songs, and poetry; themed on Jewish history & holidays. A scarce survivor: many, one expects, were burned by the anti-woke mobs of post-Weimar Germany. Founded in 1928 by Cohn, a philologist, rabbi, and playwright, the Jugendkalender in its early years endorsed the German-Jewish identity, and was popular with that community. After 1933, though, its focus shifted to stories of emigration and articles countering antisemitic propaganda. Cohn was arrested in 1935, but managed to escape to Amsterdam in 1936, reaching the USA in 1939, where he died in 1948. Small hardcover, as pictured. Text in German, a little in fraktur type; illustrations; paper band inside the rear cover holding a puzzle/game, Der Turmbau zur Babel, on a single folded sheet; rubberstamped name, Eva Speier, on free endsheet. Speier, born in 1919, escaped Germany with her parents in 1936, moving to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she became a pharmacist. She died in Iowa in 2008. Book shows some wear, splits along spine now mended; smudges, small stains, minor nicks, corners bumped; tanned ad laid in, with some adjacent tanning. 128 pages, b/w illustrations & a few photos. Sept. 1895 - in englisch an den britischen Reeder SIR DONALD CURRIE / British shipowner Sir Donald Currie (1825-1909) Three pages, small octavo. With embossed crest. Aged, and with some wear to extremities, but text clear and complete. In English. He sends two walking sticks. 'Might I ask you to send one to the honored Mr. Gladstone and beg him to accept it from me as one of his Hamburg admirers, who knows how fond he is of working with the saw.' The other stick is for Currie, 'as a small remembrance of the pleasant time I spent with you at Hamburg and Kiel.' 'Inside the sticks you will find a saw, which can be taken out and fastened on to the hook. It is a useful little tool and I hope, when often used by you and Mr Gladstone, as we say bodiey [sic] exercise produces health, may help to prolong your life and Mr. Gladstone's for many years to come, for the happiness of England and of all your friends and admirers.'
