In 1932 the author joined his two uncles in Malaya who were rubber planters. About three years later he became ill with malaria and returned to England. Previously, he was Vice-Consul in Russia in 1912, later acting British Consul-General in Moscow during WW I, leaving before the Bolshevik Revolution started. He returned to Moscow in 1918 as United Kingdom's first envoy to Bolshevik Russia, but was also working for the Secret Intelligence Service. He was accused of leading a plot against the Bolshevik regime, leading to his imprisonment, but he escaped trial through a trade with the British government, returning to England. His 1932 Memoirs of a British Agent recounts his experiences. Return To Malaya includes some of events in Russia as well as his initial visit to Malaya in 1932. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 426 pages.
