No Binding. Condition: Fine. Signed "Armand Hammer" in black ink. Letter measures is on Occidental Petroleum Corporation letterhead. It is addressed to Mr. Haig Tasjian of the Sterling Regal Co and is dated October 16, 1985. Armand Hammer, (born May 21, 1898, New York, N.Y., U.S.—died Dec. 10, 1990, Los Angeles, Calif.), American petroleum executive, entrepreneur, and art collector. The son of a doctor, Hammer had made his first $1,000,000 through his enterprising ventures in his father's pharmaceutical company before receiving a medical degree from Columbia University in 1921. Journeying to Soviet Russia in 1921 to give medical aid to that country's famine victims, he was personally persuaded by Vladimir Lenin to turn his business talents to account there instead. In 1925 he obtained a concession from the Bolsheviks to manufacture pencils for the Soviet Union, and his firm soon became the largest supplier of cheap, reliable pencils in the country. His business ventures were bought out by the Soviets in the late 1920s, and Hammer returned to the United States in 1930 laden with innumerable paintings, jewelry pieces, and other art objects formerly owned by the Romanov imperial family and sold to him by the cash-hungry Soviets. In the 1930s Hammer sold the majority of these valuables and embarked on such profitable post-Prohibition business ventures as whiskey making and the manufacture of whiskey barrels, as well as cattle raising. Tiring of his hectic business life-style, Hammer retired in 1956 but was approached that year by a friend who suggested that he finance two wildcat oil wells being drilled in Bakersfield, Calif., by the near-bankrupt Occidental Petroleum Corporation. Hammer financed the wells, which unexpectedly struck oil, and he quickly increased his holdings in Occidental, becoming the firm's chief executive officer and chairman of the board in 1957. By the mid-1960s, under Hammer's management, Occidental's gross annual income was more than $650,000,000, and profitable oil ventures in Libya (which were later nationalized) and diversifications into chemical manufacturing had boosted Occidental's gross income to more than $2,000,000,000 by 1970. Because of his longtime trade and personal contacts with the Soviets, Hammer and his firm were among the principal participants in the broadening of U.S.-Soviet trade ties that accompanied the era of detente in the 1970s. He was also a prominent art collector, and he founded the Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center in Los Angeles in 1990 to house the bulk of his collection. Signed by Author(s). …

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. 544 pages. Illustrations. Index. Inscribed bookplate signed by Armand Hammer on half-title page. DJ has some wear and soiling. Some page discoloration. Pencil erasure residue on half-title page. Armand Hammer (May 21, 1898 - December 10, 1990) was an American business manager and owner, most closely associated with Occidental Petroleum, a company he ran from 1957 until his death, though he was known as well for his art collection, his philanthropy, and for his close ties to the Soviet Union. Hammer's business interests around the world and his "citizen diplomacy" helped him cultivate a wide network of friends and associates. He appeared frequently on television, commenting on international relations or agitating for research into a cure for cancer. As of 2016, he has been the subject of six biographies-in 1975 (Considine, authorized biography), 1985 (Bryson, coffee table book), Weinberg 1989, Blumay 1992, Epstein 1996, and Alef 2009; and two autobiographies (1932 and a best seller in 1987). His art collection and his philanthropic projects were the subject of numerous publications. Derived from a Kirkus review: His odyssey runs from a comfortable childhood in the pre-WW I Bronx to the chairmanship of Occidental Petroleum, an energy concern with global revenues exceeding $15 billion annually. After graduating in 1921, he went to the Soviet Union. Once there, Hammer learned that food, not doctors or medical aid, was the real need. In return for local goods that could be sold in the US, he contracted for grain shipments--and stayed to do well. After nine years in the USSR, he returned home. Hammer's entrepreneurial instincts led him into commercial alcohol, distilling, and allied industries. In 1956 Hammer became involved with Los Angeles-based Occidental and turned a dubious local venture into a major multinational enterprise via high-stakes drilling gambles in Libya, the North Sea, Latin America, and other remote venues. In the meantime, Hammer has done much to advance the cause of world peace. By any measure, Hammer's balance sheet boasts far more credits than debits, and he can be pardoned for focusing on the high points of a remarkable life's work. An engrossing testament.…

Stated Third Edition. Octavo. 21.5cm. Publisher's heavy grain pale grey cloth titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board. Dustjacket. [xi]; 241pp. Some wear and discoloration to extremities, very light, it's a very solidly produced book, so wear and tear is represented by darkening of the cloth at the edges and some softening of the spine ends rather than anything more drastic; internally clean, ownership to front pastedown, author's signature to front flyleaf; in a handsome example of the gold and black dustjacket with some chipping and shallow loss to the spine ends, scuffing and rubbing to the gilt paper coating, and some marginal creasing and soiling. A very good, solid copy. Illustrated throughout with full page plates. For a man named by his father after the logo of the American Socialist Labor Party, after slipping out of Odessa in the 1870's, Armand Hammer's journey to become one of the world's most influential businessmen and "Lenin's Favorite Capitalist" must have been a dramatic one. His father Julius, had spent much of the early 20th century consolidating his role at Allied Drug and Chemical, which was essentially at times a smuggling front, shipping embargoed goods to Russia during the US trade sanctions. After Julius was sentenced to 3 years in Sing Sing, allegedly for a botched abortion that resulted in the death of a Russian woman from subsequent pneumonia (although modern research suggests that Armand, a medical student, might have been the one who performed the abortion, and Julius took responsibility as the qualified senior medical professional present), Armand took over Allied Drug and Chemical and raised it to new heights of corporate success. During Prohibition, Allied's largest seller was a essentially alcoholic ginger ale, sold as a medicinal tonic to great profit. Acting under the instructions of his imprisoned father, Armand began taking numerous business trips to the Soviet Union. A young J. Edgar Hoover, at that point basically an analyst at the Justice Department, very strongly believed that the equally youthful Hammer was a COMINTERN courier, and essentially placed him under surveillance for the rest of his life. Hammer's trips to Russia were ostensibly to recoup bad debts, but this quickly developed into a number of lucrative business deals, not least of which was selling cheap wheat to starving, famine hit areas of Russia. Hammer developed a close co-operative (no pun intended) relationship with Lenin, which resulted in a number of very high status business contracts and deals ranging from medical import contracts, to 25 year's worth of asbestos mining in the Urals; one of Hammer's greatest coups was arranging payment for various services in furs, caviar, jewellery and antiquities seized by the Party from its long tail of enemies, making him essentially a conduit for looted and otherwise dubious art, jewels, and antiques. At the height of Lenin's New Economic Policy, Armand Hammer was the sole trade liason between the enormity of Soviet Russia, and 38 major US corporations seeking to build trade deals through him. His grasp of the downrange necessities of dealing with the Soviets; graft, bribery, corruption, and palm greasing, was legendary, and by the 1970's when his methods were starting to be inspected more closely there was no doubt that Hammer's understanding of legitimate business was secondary to his instinctive abilities in the fields of corporate and beaurocratic bribery and manipulation. This book is one, personal perspective on the empire of treasure that Hammer accumulated; there are others, and the entangled ephemeral traces of looted artworks, forged and unfinished Fabergé eggs, specially manufactured jeweller's tools designed to copy Fabergé's style exactly, and a wealth of other foggy rumors and suspicions ranging from Armand the KGB stooge, to Armand the James Bond Villain bent on Soviet domination through capitalism, will continue to follow in his wake, whether he be considered a legitimate businessman or a highly successful 20th century robber baron of legendary proportions.
