This is a c. 1968 Hammond infographic chart and map celebrating marine exploration. The piece is dominated by a profile cross-section of the sea. It illustrates marine life at various depths, including fish, a shark, a whale, and a giant squid. Dashed lines delineate 'zones', with each falling within the neritic or the oceanic province. Three world maps and other ocean related diagrams occupy the rest of the sheet. The largest is a map submarine topography, likely drawn from the research of Marie Tharp. Below, profile views of the floor of the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean are included. The second map, in the upper right, details currents. The third and final map, in the upper left, highlights commercial fishing areas, other general fisheries, and whaling areas. Diagrams along the left present information about oceanic life cycles and part of the oceanic food chain. Verso Content - Human Oceanic Exploration Photographs, diagrams, and short descriptions of manmade submersibles occupy the verso. Among the submersibles illustrated are Trieste (a bathyscaph that reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench), Tektite I (an underwater station much like a space station), Deep Quest , and Aluminaut . Dating This Piece Based on verso content concerning undersea exploration, we are confident that this piece was published in 1968 or possibly early 1969. Deep Quest made its record-setting voyage on February 28, 1968, and the details of this excursion, including the depth it reached, are provided. Tektite I, which the map states 'will soon be undertaken', did not begin until 1969. The Tektite habitat was installed in the U.S. Virgin Islands by seventeen Navy Seabee divers beginning on January 28, 1969, and installation was completed on February 12. Tektite I began on February 15, 1969, when four U.S. Department of the Interior scientists took up residence in the habitat. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by Hammond Incorporated c. 1968. Good condition. Exhibits wear along original fold lines, especially at fold intersection, where there are some verso reinforcements. Exhibits some toning. Size 22 x 32 Inches. This is a c. 1941 C. S. Hammond and Company pictorial map of the United States highlighting the military and economic resources available on the brink of World War II. Blue-colored cogs highlight industrial areas around the country to illustrate the manufacturing might that could be brought to bear. Other defense industries are marked on the map by icons, including shipyards, factories for making planes, airplane engines, munitions, tanks, guns, steel, and aluminum. Army and navy bases are identified as well, as are army and navy airfields. The Pictorial Border - A Show of Military Force It is the pictorial border, however, that immediately draws the viewer's attention. The air, land, and sea forces of the United States military are put on full display, creating a forceful image that undoubtedly counts as propaganda and shouts 'support the military'. Cutting edge aircraft, such as the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, Lockheed P-38 Lightning, Grumman F4F Wildcat, and Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, are prominently illustrated along the map's top border. Tanks, artillery guns, howitzers, and supply trucks along the map's two sides represent ground forces. The Navy Perhaps the most incredible part of this piece (with the benefit of hindsight of course) is the placement of the battleship front and center along the bottom border. The legendary naval engagements fought between the United States and Japan had not yet occurred, and naval strategists believed that the battleship, not the aircraft carrier, would be the key element to success on the world's oceans. An aircraft carrier appears to the right of the battleship, complete with its aircraft on the flight deck. A heavy cruiser steams to the battleship's left, surrounded by torpedo boats, light cruisers, destroyers, and submarines. Insignia Illustrations of American Army and Navy insignia frame the entire piece, with army insignia on the left and navy insignia on the right. Army insignia of rank, from general to private first class, are situated at the top left, while insignia of 'arms and services', such as the infantry, ordnance department, signal corps, and medical corps, are on the bottom left. Naval insignia of rank are just opposite, on the top right, while naval specialty marks, such as sharpshooter, bugler, machinist's mate, and cook, are on the bottom right. A sample of Army and Navy Air Corps insignia are included along the top, while the insignia of army headquarters, field armies, army corps, and army divisions are along the bottom. A highly detailed 1918 C.S. Hammond double-sided road map of Long Island and New York City. It demonstrates the transformation of Long Island from rural farmland and forest to a suburban continuation of the New York metro area, a transformation facilitated by the rapid development of highways. A Closer Look One side of the map illustrates New York City, Nassau County, and the western portion of Suffolk County, depicting from New Jersey east to Smithtown and Central Islip. Red lines highlight major highways. The street grid in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx is illustrated, along with certain neighborhoods in Queens, including Long Island City, Flushing, and Corona. Towns farther east on Long Island are labeled, many of which have small street grid illustrations as well. The Long Island Railway is depicted, as are long-distance trolleys or electric railway lines. Circled numbers on the map correspond to a list of golf clubs on Long Island at top-right. A map of eastern Suffolk County occupies the other side of the map. Major roads are illustrated and are differentiated between 'good roads' and 'fair roads'. Riverhead, Southold, and Southampton are illustrated. An inset along the upper border continues along the South Shore and focuses on East Hampton. A second, smaller inset continues the North Shore and illustrates Orient Point, Gardiners Bay, and Plum Island. Before the LIE The first express roadways for automobiles on Long Island opened in the years before this map's publication, most notably the Vanderbilt Parkway (here as the Long Island Motor Parkway), privately built by William Kissam Vanderbilt II in 1908 for racing purposes. The Jericho Turnpike (NY 25), Hempstead Turnpike (NY 24), and other turnpikes and parkways appear here. By the 1920s and 1930s, a growing bureaucracy was required at the local, county, and state levels to manage the rapidly changing landscape of Long Island. Deeply involved with such efforts was Robert Moses, later a famous (or infamous) urban planner, who began his career as President of the Long Island State Park Commission. Among his greatest impacts on Long Island was the prioritization of automobile parkways, making the suburban sprawl of the mid-20th century possible.
