Hired by Oliver Cromwell, Hane was tasked with investigating the strength of opposition forces in France, and forging connections with disaffected French citizens. His mission was part of Cromwell's broader foreign policy strategy, which sought either to ally England with Spain against France, or with France against Spainâ"ultimately Cromwell chose the latter. Despite Hane's best efforts at discretion, his investigations drew the attention of a rogue faction of French Loyalists who arrested him and subjected him to intense interrogation and threats of torture. After a series of harrowing experiences, Hane managed to escape his captors and make his way back to England. The book's historical significance lies in its firsthand account of Cromwell's foreign policy strategy and the dangers faced by English agents abroad.
