Despite Hane's best efforts at discretion, his investigations drew the attention of a rogue faction of French Loyalists who arrested him and subjected him to intense interrogation and threats of torture. After a series of harrowing experiences, Hane managed to escape his captors and make his way back to England. The book's historical significance lies in its firsthand account of Cromwell's foreign policy strategy and the dangers faced by English agents abroad.
