Jean Appier Hanzelet (1596-1647) fut à la fois ingénieur et graveur, fonda dès 1620 une imprimerie à Pont-à-Mousson. La Pyrotechnie est parue en 1630, refonte du texte de 1620. Si l'ouvrage débute par des compilations de Diego Ufano et de du Pressac, s'ensuivent des discussions autour des ''manuvres de force'', du problème du pointage, des ''feux de guerre'' et des ''artifices de plaisir''. Hanzelet a aussi rédigé un autre ouvrage fort curieux : '' Recueil de plusieurs machines militaires et feux artificiels pour la guerre et récréation, avec l'alphabet de Trittemius par lequel chacun qui scait ecrire peut composer en latin, aussy le moyen d'ecrire la nuit a son amy absent'', Pont-à-Mousson, 1620. La plupart de l'invention de l'auteur : canons, balistique, pyrotechnie, ponts, bombes, barils à feu, grenades, pétards, arquebuses, mortiers, fusées, etc. Parmi les plus notables, on distingue l'échelle à coulisse (p. 158) et les orgues où l'on reconnaît la première idée de la mitrailleuse (p. 208). Jean Appier, dit Hanzelet (1596-1647), fils de Jean Appier, ingénieur des ducs de Lorraine, fut initié à la pyrotechnie et la physique par son père. Il fut graveur sur cuivre, imprimeur de l?Université jusqu'en 1628, puis ?maître des feux artificiels? du Duc de Lorraine Charles IV. Elle a été augmentée et contient 29 figures supplémentaires. Beau titre-frontispice et 130 figures à mi-page ou à pleine page, le tout gravé à l'eau-forte, la plupart par Jean Appier lui-même : sièges, balistique, pyrotechnie, bombes, pétards, fuées, etc. Parmi les plus notables curiosités, on note l'échelle à coulisse (p. 158) et les Orgues où l'on reconnaît la première idée de la mitrailleuse (p. 208). Cité par Wernher von Braun. Tour à tour imprimeur, graveur et "Maître des feux artificiels" du duc de Lorraine, Appier-Hanzelet imagina des machines fort curieuses dont un cylindre de métal coiffé d'un cône, chargé de dix livres de poudre à combustion lente, stabilisé dans sa course par une longue baguette de bois en guise de gouvernail (p. 239). L'ouvrage est cité par Wernher von Braun dans son History of rocketry and space travel. Bel exemplaire en reliure de l'époque.
