Illustrated with innumerable black and white engravings, photographs and drawings and including the famous detachable plate of the linghi - (Chinese torture of slow cutting), which the author recommends that sensitive souls could remove if it offended their Western principles! viii + 308pp. Early twentieth century half calf, rubbed and corners bumped, boards in pebbled cloth. Leather title label lettered in gilt, endpapers browned, inner hinges split but holding firm, a tight and clean copy. 21 x 14cm. The only edition of this curious work, which, despite the author's prejudices, offers insight into the opinions of the Chinese, faced with Western invasions. It ironically relates the grievances addressed to Western "Barbarians" by Chinese "Barbarians" through 4 fictional accounts entitled: Opinions of an Enlightened Scholar, The Discovery of Europe by a Son of Han, Opinions of an Aggressive Scholar, Opinions of a Boxer. Text in French.
