Theodor Zwinger, der "Jüngere", Enkel von Jacob Zwinger (1569-1610). " geb. 26. August 1658 zu Basel, studirte und promovirte daselbst 1680 mit der Diss.: "De paedotrophia" (paidatrophiak),…brachte dann 2 Jahre lang in Frankreich, mit längerem Aufenthalte in Paris und Strassburg zu, erhielt nach seiner Rückkehr die Professur der Rhetorik in seiner Vaterstadt, die er 3 Jahre später mit dem Lehrstuhl der Physik vertauschte. In dieser Stellung wirkte Zwingher insofern mit besonderem Erfolge, als er auf eigene Kosten ein physikalische Cabinet schuf und zum 1. Male den Unterricht mit Experimenten begleitete. 1703 ging Zwinger zur Professur der Anatomie und Botanik über und 1711 wurde er mit dem Lehrstuhl der theoretischen uud praktischen Medizin betraut. Er starb 22. April 1724. Zwinger war ein sehr gelehrter Arzt und tüchtiger Kenner der Naturwissenschaften. Er hat eine Reihe von kleineren Disserttationen und kleineren Schriften veröffentlicht, ausserdem noch ein seiner Zeit sehr beliebtes populärmedizinisches Werkchen: "Sicher und geschwinder Arzt" (Basel 1684; 1686; 1694; 1703; 1725; 1748)." Theodor Zwinger was a Swiss scholar - something of a univeralist, interested in many different topics. He was trained as a physician at the University of Padua, and returned to Basel where he joined the faculty there, lecturing on medical theory as well as Greek and ethics. Zwinger was known to be a supporter of Paracelsus. He is well known for his work on the art of travel, to which he gave the appearance of a science.
