Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Large 8vo. pp 132 + 5 pp publishers advertisements. Illus and folding map. Original publisher's pale blue black lettered paper-covered boards, with integral front (unclipped) and rear flaps as for a d.j. Some slight soiling to front cover and spine, which is slightly wrinkled and with slight rubbing to spine ends. With photographic illustrations and fold-out map. Scattered very light foxing to a few pages. About VG. With ownership signature on ffep of Sir Tom Hickinbotham, followed by "Bombay July 1940" in his hand. There are also inscriptions by Hickinbotham on the rear fep: these apparently form an aide memoire, with a tally of months served from the end of 1937 into 1940; prices including freight charges and duty (tax); "pay July" (his salary for the month of his ownership inscription on ffep, i.e. July 1940); and under "British Consulate Muscat" his list includes "Instruct Naser, sell car". Hickinbotham served in the Indian Political Service from 1930, and these notes to himself must relate to a change of posting. He was Political Agent in Muscat in the 1930s and in Kuwait in the 1940s: these Arabian protectorates were part of British India's informal empire, and were controlled by the Indian Political Service. In the 1950s Sir Tom Hickinbotham was Governor of Aden and of the wider Aden Protectorate. See also item no. 32.
