Soft cover. Condition: VG. No place, no date, almost certainly published by the author, circa 1970s, 38pp, illustrated with historical photographs, and a portrait of the author at front cover, stiff printed blue wraps, stapled at spine as issued, very fresh, clean, and bright, inside and out, with a bit of toning noted along spine edge. From the opening paragraph, "When I, Mrs. Nel Harper, (then Mrs. Nel Johnson) arrived in Hazard in 1921, I traveled by passenger train with my three small children, Princess, Tom and Jack. At that time, Hazard had no paved streets, barns housing cows, pigs and chickens were prominent on Main Street and many of our new buildings today were not even a dream in the minds of residents here." Nell Tye Johnson Harper was born on August 9th 1893 in Whitley County. She came to Hazard, where she was engaged to teach at the Hazard Baptist Institute. For two years, she taught the sixth grade and High School Science. Upon the insistence of her sister, Rachel Tye Baker, she left HBI and joined her in the Hazard Poultry and Supply Company. In 1932, she left her sister's business and took over Dale's Grocery on Main Street in Hazard. Johnson opened Johnson's Department Store in the same spot in 1934. The Hazard High School band performed at the opening ceremonies. Nell first met J. O. Harper when he came to Hazard in 1932. He was a salesman with the Maury Coal Company and later worked for the Stratton and Terstagge Company. They were married in 1938 and Mr. Harper joined Nell in the management of Johnson's Department Store. Nell died in 1982. Very scarce.
