Original green boards lettered in gold gilt on spine; laminated pictorial DJ, 359pp incl Appendix. 'Captain (later Sir) William Cornwallis Harris was an Englishman with a passion for the hunting of big game. "From my boyhood upwards," he says, "I have been taxed by the facetious with 'shooting madness', and truly a most delightful mania I have ever found it." An officer in the East India Company's corps of engineers, he was granted two years' leave on medical grounds, and decided to exploit this opportunity to indulge his interest in the wild game of Africa. He arrived at the Cape in 1836 and spent two years travelling in South Africa, from Port Elizabeth to as far north as the Limpopo River - described in his book as "a hunting expedition from the Cape of Good Hope through the territories of the Chief Moselekatse to the Tropic of Capricorn". But Harris was not just a hunter: he was a careful observer of the social and political situation in which he found himself - a situation of special interest because his visit coincided with the early days of the Great Trek, and he made detailed observations about the conditions of the Trekkers, and of their initial conflicts with indigenous people.' Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 3rd Edition. Large Octavo. xvi, 359pp. 26 coloured lithographic plates. Folding map and appendix section at rear. Full brown calf, decorated in gilt and blind to covers. Spine profusely gilt-decorated with four raised bands, titling in gilt. Upper edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Coloured plates throughout. Folding map and appendix to rear. Third edition. William Cornwallis Harris was a military engineer in the service of the East India Company when, in 1836, his health compelled him to take leave and seek the restorative air of the Cape Colony. What followed was one of the great sporting and natural history expeditions of the nineteenth century. Harris and a small party pushed north from the Cape into territories then entirely unknown to European science; through the lands of the Matabele chief Moselekatse, across the Limpopo, to the Tropic of Capricorn. What Harris encountered during this expedition transformed his understanding of what Africa was. He encountered wildlife of a scale and variety that defied all prior European conception: vast herds of elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and sable antelope moving across plains of extraordinary beauty. He was among the first Europeans to observe and describe the sable antelope, which was subsequently named Hippotragus niger harrisi in his honour. This third edition of his work is the complete edition - the first edition to contain the complete suite of colour-illustrated plates he created during the trip. Near fine. Some mild markings and rubbing to covers. Gilt bright and bold throughout. Contents near fine with a hint of toning here and there; otherwise clear, bright, and well preserved. Coloured plates remain vivid and colourful. Folding map present. Author (illustrator).…

Some scuffing to the leather and rubbing and scratches to the marbled paper covered boards. "One of the most important and valuable of the large folio works on South African fauna. In the prospectus of the volume, which appeared in the "Narrative of an Expedition into Southern Africa" (Bombay, 1838), it is stated that the publication of the " twenty-eight original paintings " was made with the "object to combine in them, as far as possible, information which might be useful to the Naturalist, the Sportsman, and the Lover of Wild Scenery." The delineations of the quadrupeds were "drawn from repeated measurements upon a uniform scale of one and a half inches to a foot. One or more of each species is depicted in the foreground of an appropriate landscape, twelve by seventeen inches, with groups in the distance or middle ground." This arrangement has enabled the author " to convey an accurate idea of the nature of the country inhabited by each species,; also their manner of living, in numerous herds, in small families, or singly. It was estimated that the expense of publishing the volume would be £5000, and at the time the advertisement appeared 250 subscribers had been obtained at £10. The list given in the volume, however, is far larger, and 449 copies are accounted for amongst the names given. In addition to the beautiful coloured engravings which render this work almost the most highly prized of the books relating to South African animals, every plate is accompanied by an exhaustive chapter upon the characteristics of the animal represented, as well as by a short sketch of its personal appearance, &c., and numerous engravings in the letterpress illustrate the notes." Carter Dec. 19, 1848. Bookplate for I. M. Bonham-Carter of 5th Fusiliers in 1925. One of the essential 19th-century works on African game, Harris' narrative goes far beyond big-game hunting and is an invaluable portrayal of southern Africa in mid-19th century. His work is regarded as the first and cornerstone work concerning the hunt of game animals in Africa - in other words, the first published African Safari. In many cases the illustrations were among the earliest glimpses Western peoples experienced of fascinating African animals. However, the author and his entourage travelled by wagon and oxen through the realms of the Matabele king and the Barolong country, so that he was able to describe African peoples as well. He gives interesting accounts of the Matabele people and experiences with the Bushmen, Hottentots and other tribes. His description of his stay with King Moseletatse is of great historical value. He also includes reports of The Great Trek, the massacre of Piet Retief and his party by Dingaan, the fall of Piet Uys in an abortive invasion of the Zulu territories, the death of Maritz, and annihilation of the Natal Settlers, etc. Interesting map exhibits the relative positions of the emigrant farmers and the native tribes. Note that a former owner was Air Commodore Ian Malcolm Bonham-Carter, CB, OBE (1882 1953), senior officer in the Royal Air Force. The H. B. Carter above would probably be his father, Hugh. "One of the rarest of all books dealing with African big game and sport, this monumental presentation depicts wild game of southern Africa as encountered and studied by Harris. Add to basketFirst Edition. Elephant Folio 23" tall. Very Good. First Edition, First Issue, folio (572 x 400mm). Hand-coloured lithographic title page, followed by a printed title page, both dated 1840. 30 lithographic plates drawn on stone by Frank Howard and printed on large Columbier paper with lithographed tail pieces. Bound in contemporary half dark red Morocco and marbled boards. Gilt edges and spine gilt in compartments with wildlife motif. Some wear to the edges and spine. Missing the list of subscribers in the back. Foxing through much of the book, but particularly heavy early and later in the book. Most plate with moderate or little to no foxing, but four plates with pronounced foxing (XV - Antilope, XVIII - Roan, XXVII - Wild Boar, XXX - Hyena) The first book to be entirely dedicated to big game hunting in Africa, which subsequently influence a great number of hunters to travel to South Africa. Harris was the consummate hunter's hunter, shooting animals in quantities never seen before and never matched since, partly due to the fact that most of the game was gone in later years. The book is inspired by his hunting expedition from the Cape Colony going as far as the Tropic of Capricorn in 1836; 1837.One of the most important and valuable of the large folio works on South African fauna; In addition to the beautiful coloured engravings (sic) which render this work almost the most highly prized of the books relating to South African animals, every plate is accompanied by an exhaustive chapter upon the characteristics of the animal represented, as well as by a short sketch of its personal appearance. ; Mendelssohn, (S. ) South African Bibliography, volume 1, page 688-9.'One of the rarest of all books dealing with African big game and sport, this monumental presentation depicts wild game of southern Africa as encountered and studied by Harris. The tinted lithographs highlighted in colour by hand are especially lovely and make this volume exceptionally desirable. Included among the portraits are elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, lion, leopard, kudu, roan, eland, and quagga, among others. Each of the illustrations is also enlivened by scenic backgrounds of the habitat. The portraits are highlighted with Harris' detailed descriptions of the game, habitat, and with occasional mention of his hunting adventures.' R. ) Travel in Aquatint and Lithography 1779 - 1860, number 335, pages 287 - 290. ; Published in five parts at 2. 2s. Each part, on large (Columbier) paper, with tail-pieces, or at 1. 1s.
