Inside a little foxing to end papers and the odd spot throughout. The frontis and plate 16 both some have some foxing and a little foxing to border of plate 7, otherwise all plates in very good clean and bright condition. William Bernhard Tegetmeier, a correspondent and friend of Charles Darwin, was an English naturalist, a founding member of the Savage Club and a popular writer and journalist of domestic science. Tegetmeier helped Darwin acquire much of the material for his practical work, providing information and specimens. A nice copy of a scarce first edition.

Smith on full title page, and the remnants of a removed pocket on the verso of the rear library cover. 194 pages, plus 24 black and white plates, plus 7 color plates. The 7 color plates are bound with a Smithsonian note that states the color plates were originally intended for a separate publication to be issued by the Department of Agriculture, but that publication was never issued and the plates were transferred to the Smithsonian (U. S. National Museum) and are included in this publication by request. Text and plates clean and bright. The authors, Dyar and Smith, apparently did not like each other and apparently enjoyed changing each other's taxonomic nomenclature and went so far as to mockingly name species after each other.
