Hardback. Condition: New. It was in Paris in 1927, at an exhibition dedicated to Picasso, that Francis Bacon grasped his vocation as a painter. In 1946, he moved to Monaco on the French Riviera where he lived for four years, his time in the Principality marking a turning point in his art; with his popes series, he became a painter of the human figure. In Paris he befriended artists and intellectuals, such as Giacometti and Leiris, whilst the city would become the setting for the crystalisation of his reputation in 1971 with the retrospective at the Grand Palais. In 1975, Bacon would take a studio in the Marais district. This bilingual publication co-published by Albin Michel and The Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation tells of Bacon s deep ties with France and Monaco, and has been overseen by Martin Harrison, author of Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonne and curator of the coinciding exhibition Francis Bacon, Monaco et la culture franc aise which runs at Grimaldi Forum, Monaco from 2 July 2016 until 4 September 2.

Travel back in time to the roaring 1930s with this captivating account of San Francisco's tumultuous efforts to dispose of sewage and protect its iconic beaches from pollution. Witness the challenges faced by a team of sanitary engineers as they investigate, study, and propose ingenious solutions to the urgent health and environmental concerns plaguing the city's waterfront. The narrative delves into the complex interplay between sewage disposal and the natural environment, exploring the influence of tides, currents, and rainfall on the spread of contamination. The author's detailed analysis of float movements and bacterial contamination data illuminates the extent of the problem and the need for swift action. Through the book's pages, readers will gain a deep understanding of the innovative engineering solutions devised to tackle these challenges, including the construction of treatment plants and the implementation of a submerged outlet pipe system. The author highlights the intricacies of balancing environmental protection with the growing population's needs, offering valuable insights into the complexities of urban sewage management. Ultimately, this book not only chronicles a chapter in San Francisco's history but also underscores the timeless importance of safeguarding our environment and the ingenuity that can arise when faced with pressing challenges. The study was triggered by a lawsuit filed by local landowners against the New York city of Gloversville in 1899 due to the pollution caused by dumping untreated waste into the local Cayadutta Creek. The author describes the research done over nearly a year to determine the most effective and efficient method of sewage treatment given the unique challenges presented by the composition of Gloversville's sewage. Several methods are explored including septic and sedimentation tanks, filtration through sprinkling filters, and intermittent filtration through sand. The author details the benefits and drawbacks of each method and provides data from the experiments conducted, ultimately recommending a combination of sedimentation, sprinkling filters, and sand filters for the most effective and economical solution. This book provides a valuable resource for municipalities and organizations facing similar challenges in sewage treatment, offering insights into the complexities of treating industrial wastewater.
