He studied Chemistry at the University of Vienna and Munich, where he obtained his Ph.D. degree under Willstaetter. After post-doctorate research with Willstaetter, and microbological studies in Copenhagen, he worked with P.A. Levene at the Rockefeller Institute from 1924-1926. The subsequent two years were spent in the Department of Bacteriology of New York University Medical College. Since 1928, he has been in charge of the Department of Chemistry of the Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he has actively participated in the development of modern clinical chemistry. In addition to numerous research papers, reviews, articles, and text book chapters in the field of clinical chemistry, enzymes, organic chemistry and colloid phenomena, he is the auth or of two books on steroids and on bile."
