Putnam & Son, New York, 1870, mounted and inscribed albumen print photograph of William Bryant on frontis, 382 pp, full stamped leather, 9.75 x 7", 4to. In good condition. Binding shaken. Front gutter is tender and has been pr…eviously glued improperly. Opening the book is tender and fragile. Presents beautifully with stunning stag and woodland animals surrounding a shield with Bryant's name in the center. Two eagles and butterflies flank the front board. A duck, rooster, partridge surround the scene. The rear board depicts Bryant's youth the most notable at the center being a newsboy. Carved alongside are the cipher and binder's marks dated 1869. Remarkably stunning in both quality, style and condition. Minimal wear to extremities with minor instances of rubbing to spine. Inner dentelles remain bright and clean. All edges gilt. Interior is lightly toned with minor instances of foxing. Free of marginalia. Inscribed photo of Bryant on frontis "Yours at the Old Homestead. William Cullen Bryant. Cummington, August 7th 1869" PRINTED in his hand below. (Not original signature) Again, binding is fragile. Please see photos. William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), great American poet and newspaper editor was born in Cummington, Massachusetts. The son of a learned and highly respectable physician, Bryant was exposed to English poetry in his father's vast library. As a boy he became devoted to the New England countryside and was a keen observer of nature. In his early poems, such as Thanatopsis; To a Waterfowl; Inscription for the Entrance to a Wood; and The Yellow Violet, he celebrated the majesty of nature in a style that was influenced by the English romantics but also reflected a personal simplicity and dignity. Admitted to the bar in 1815, after a year at Williams and private study, Bryant practiced law in Great Barrington, MA. In 1825 he went to New York City where hew as already known as a poet and critic. He became associate editor of the New York Evening Post in 1826, and from 1829 to his death was part owner and editor in chief. And industrious and forthright editor of a highly literate paper, he was a defender of human rights and an advocate of free trade, abolition of slavery, and other reforms. He also holds an important place in literature as the earlier American theorist of poetry. In his Lectures on Poetry and other critical essays he stressed the values of simplicity, original imagination, and morality. During his later career Bryant traveled widely, made many public speeches and continued to write poetry.
