The customs and habits of the Indian are woven into these stories in an interesting and direct manner, adapted to the child's understanding. The incidents suggest vivid mental pictures, arousing curiosity and desire to know more. Stories contain short sentences and simple vocabulary. Story is a narrative of a little Algonquin boy who lives in the NY area; he travels westard through the Niagara River; Lake Erie into the prairie region. He meets a Sioux boy; they hunt buffalo; cross the Mississipi and trvel southwest to the Grand Canyon, entering the country of the Navaho and Pueblo; finally returning home, where Shining Star goes home and is made chief of the tribe. Pages tight; slight yellowing; several color illustrations throughout book. Moderate page wear. No markings on pages. Previous school name stamped on front inside blank page. Small tears on a few pages. Orange hardback cover with black lettering and illustration of two Indian boys and horse. Inside spine fold slightly weakened. Covers and spine edges and corners show rubbing and fraying. A rare vintage school reader!
