Het werk van wijlen Havank wordt met de regelmaat van een klok herdrukt en geen lezer zal dan ook hiaten in zijn Schaduw-verzameling hoeven aan te wijzen In zijn eerste boeken sloot Havank zich nog angstvallig aan bij de toen heersende orthodoxe traditie, gevestigd door Edgar Wallace en door een pionier als Ivans, maar in zijn latere romans kreeg de humor van zijn persoonlijke taalgebruik hoe langer hoe meer de overhand. Na Havanks dood wordt de serie voortgezet door de journalist-schrijver Pieter Terpstra, die door pers en publiek vrijwel onverdeeld is geprezen om zijn inlevingsvermogen in het hoogst merkwaardige zieleleven van de Schaduw.

Toen Havank in 1964 overleed liet hij vier onvoltooide manuscripten na, waarvan Menuet te Middernacht het verst was vervorderd. Het had hem jarenlang beziggeho…uden en hij had er de andere drie telkens weer voor opzij gelged. Inspiratie voor dit boek had hij gevonden in het achttiendeeeuwse protret van de historische Anne-Marie, dat hij aantrof op Dekema State bij Leeuwarden, waar hij gast was wanneer hij vertoefde in zijn geboortestad. Anne Marie is dan ook de hoofdpersoon in dit merkwaardige, ja hoogstmerkwaardige Schaudw-verhaal, dat beurtelings in het verleden, in 1793 , en in het heden speelt. Het voert de Schaduw en zijn gezellen naar het oude Roxton Abbey waar het noodlot, dat door iedereen met toenemende spanning wordt voorvoeld, zich pas voltrekt als - in de laatste bladzijden - het Menuet van Boccherini bij het het luiden van de kerstklokken wordt gepseeld. De afloop van de Schaduwverhaal had Havank kort voor zijn heengaan verteld aan de schrijver Pieter Terpstra. Het lag dan ook voor de hand dat deze het boek zou voltooien. Gebruik makend van notities die in de nalatenschap werden gevonden heeft Terpstra dit gedaan op een wijze waarvoor zelfs Havank bewondering zou hebben gehad.

Maar afgezien daarvan zijn er duizenden dollars die hoegenaamd geen aanspraak kunnen maken op het Amerikaanse burgerrecht Het werk van wijlen Havank wordt met de regelmaat van een klok herdrukt en geen lezer zal dan ook hiaten in zijn collectie Schaduw-verhalen behoeven aan te wijzen. In zijn eerste boeken zoals Het mysterie van St. Eustache en Het spookslot aan de Loire sloot Havank zich nog angstvallig aan bij de toen heersende orthodoxe traditie, gevestigd door Edgar Wallace en door een pionier als Ivans, maar in zijn latere romans kreeg de humor van zijn persoonlijke taalgebruik hoe langer hoe meer de overhand. Een Schaduw-verhaal dat zo ongeveer de hoogste totaaloplage van allemaal bereikte, was Polka Mazurka. Een titel die dit succes leek te evenaren, was Menuet te middernacht, dat na Havanks dood werd voltooid door Pieter Terpstra. Onverdeeld geprezen door pers en publiek om zijn inlevingsvermogen in het hoogst merkwaardige zieleleven van de Schaduw legde Terpstra nadien de laatste hand aan De Erven Mateor, Mysterie op Mallorca en Schaduw achter de tralies.
